My progression - Camel, Benson & Hedges Menthol, Benson & Hedges Non-Menthol, Benson & Hedges Non-Menthol Light, Virginia Slims 100s Ultralight (price of B&H went up, so I switched), Marlboro 100 Ultralight (price of VS went up, so I switched), Vapor 1000.
Smoked for 31 years starting out with the brutes and working my way down, but many years, including recently, I used four packs a day and sometimes five (in the 90s).
I'm vaping 24 and 36 mg. This morning I loaded up the 36 and decided to see if I could either get a buzz from it or have other symptoms. It took an hour of chugging and one battery change, and I never did get a buzz, but I got REALLY nauseated. So much for that. I'll never reach that point in casual use, I see.
A point to consider, however, is that your nicotine intake with e-cigs is both much lower and much slower to peak than with cigarettes. Thus you might consider going with higher than your first estimation based on what you've smoked. I'm going to cut down the 36 because the 24 works just as well for me.
There's a alternate argument that one should start low and then tweak the mix upward to decide what the minimum daily demand is going to be. I think that's fine, too.
By the way, I'm using 3 x cartridges for a DSE-801 per day. That's 1.1 ml x 36 mg per cartridge. If I was REALLY ingesting anywhere near that amount, I think I'd be one very sick puppy - or going to meet my maker, e-cigarette in hand.
