Technically, there's no ban on vaping in Illinois. So, you can vape in resturants and bars. Some even openly allow it. However!! until the general public has a solid understanding of what vaping is all about, I would stealth vape. What I mean by that is I wouldn't sit in TGIF and send up plumes of vapor! just small hits with little to no vapor and you should be fine. If you are from the Chicagoland area, I would strongly suggest joining the Windy City Vapors Club. The WCV club meets up once a month at the Pine Grove Resturant in Rosemont. We have over 300 sample juice bottles from different vendors across the country that you can sample and vape until your heart content. Just about the coolest people you would ever want to meet and all are welcome. People that can answer any question you have and you can check out pretty much every mod in the ecig community. If you are curious, you can youtube the meet up video's and if you are interested in joining there should be a link in the Windy City subforum in social groups on ECF.

As Crossbar said you can vape just about anywhere if you put a little thought into it. Never blow big plumes of vapor anywhere smoking is not permitted. No one really wants to see your vapor anyway and stealth vaping is easy. Try drawing about half your normal vape then continue to inhale afterward hold your breath about 3 seconds then exhale and almost no vapor is visible. If there is still some visible vapor blow it into your sleeve or into your closed hand. The offensive part of smoking is the smell which there is very little of with vaping and if you are using a fruity flavor those around you may find it pleasant instead of offensive.

Man, Don't hit for the ladies room.
If they don't let you vape, make sure you are talking to the owner. It isn't illegal and some flunky manager shouldn't be making that decision.
Never get rude, but make it clear you won't be returning, and either will some of your "vaping" friends.
We had to stand out in the cold, in the past and were (or are if you still smoke) taxed at 10x the price of the product. I personally slipped over the "Cheddar Curtain" where the restaurant/bar assoc's fought hard for the right to smoke, and lost. Illinois restaurant/bar assoc, didn't even whimper or pitch a fit, so they deserve no respect from me.

I live N N/W of Barrington, and have never been refused a vaping opportunity in ANY establishment. Most (70%) waitresses smoke, so I hand em a e-cig (w/condom) and let them use it as I am being served. They take it behind the counter and have a blast with it. I ALWAYS get my coffee topped up when I do that and many questions are asked.
A great opportunity to educate the public, and get the word out on e-cig's positive effects. An educated public will be our best defense when fighting the FDA in the future(since the battles are not over by a long shot)

I personally will vape courteously and rarely in front of children, but I am bold about not being shoved out in the "Chitown Cold " again.

Earthpig, Barrington is really close to me. Do you have any recommendations for places that are already vape friendly? I'd like to see a list somewhere. Cooper's Hawk in South Barrington said no. It's a small chain, though, so that's probably why. I've heard that chains are less receptive. I'll do my best to get places to allow it, but I think it would be really helpful if those who have already succeeded helped those establishments get new customers by listing them somewhere.

All the family restaurants I've been to in Wauconda and Crystal Lake and McHenry have never had issues. I sorta avoid Barrington, but not due to my vaping. I'm not rude about it, and play it somewhat stealth at first. Yet no one has ever done more than ask a question or two.
Also I am a coffee freak. Love a good coffee w/ 2 shots of expresso. "Conscious Cup" in CL, on Rt-14 next door to "Around the Clock". (Best coffee shop I've ever been to).
and "Honey Hill" in downtown Wauconda (very good as well).
They are my hangouts.

A list shouldn't be needed unless it's a listing of those who are anti, so we can avoid their establishments, and let them know why.

I live in the Chicago burbs also and have had no problem vaping. I have done it in Kappy's in Villa Park, Ruths Chris Steak House near Schaumburg and numerous other places. The only time I had anything come up was when bus-boy saw me and ran to get the manager. The manager saw what I was doing, asked a bunch of questions and told me to puff away. He sees it as a way to get people back into his bar part of the restaurant. A lot of owners/managers want me to make clouds of vapor in their bar areas to encourage others to start ecigs so they will use the bar more regular.
