Whats going to happen to us all when there's a complete BAN?

:(Hi,

A few months ago i purchased my first e-cig, a dse901 and with much anticipation started on my path towards 100% vaping.
Unfortunately and with much dissapointment, things didnt work out as well as id hoped but im deadset on starting over and making it work for me this time round.

One thing that really concerns me tho, as im sure it does all other members too is the negative legislation towards vaping and e-cigarettes.
I may be wrong (and i frequently am) but i think a total ban is pretty much imminent. Especially here in england.

The main thing thats stopping me putting my heart and soul into vaping, is the fear of becoming totally dependant on something which may very soon become completely illegal.

Because, what will happen to us all then?? Does anyone have any contingency plans or thoughts for the best way forward from this? Because im at a bit of a loss.
And is anyone out there already preparing for the possible ban? By for example starting to stock up on e-liquid.

Lastly, would the ban be for e-cigarettes, e-liquid and everything associated with them? Or would it still be possible to purchase the actual device and spare parts, just not the actual e-liquid.

Im sorry to ask so many questions, thank you all for your help. I really need it!

Katharine xx

Hi Champagnekaty,

It looks like the FDA considers the parts and the liquid together as an unapproved new drug and device combination. So they will want to limit everything. Some people are stocking up, others are planning to wean themselves down, others are learning to DIY at all levels.

We all need to get active. The proposed bans in Illinois and Maryland were beaten for this legislative session. California amended the bill that's in process to only ban sales to minors. A couple of other states ban sales to only to minors. People are working to raise awareness and correct misinformation, get the word out. Check the campaigning subforum, there's lots of information about what's going on and what we can do to be proactive. If you haven't already - sign the petitions, fill out the surveys, contact your legislators etc, read the news articles and digg or facebook them.

The more people involved, the better our chances to keep vaping available.

Hi, thanks for all your help. Its much appreciated.

Here is an article i found dated Wednesaday 20th January 2010 - BBC News - Proof lacking on e-cigarettes' safety, experts warn
By Michelle Roberts
Health reporter, BBC News

'e-cigarettes' look real, but are battery-powered and typically made of stainless steel
There is a worrying lack of safety data on electronic cigarettes, despite their growing popularity with the public, two leading Greek researchers have warned.

In the British Medical Journal, they say that without more evidence it is impossible to know if such products actually do more harm than good.

Some studies have raised safety fears, but retailers argue e-cigarettes are a healthy alternative to the real thing.

Users can inhale nicotine without tar, tobacco or carbon monoxide.

The Department of Health suggested consumers "exercise caution".

The Department of Health is not aware of any evidence about the long-term safety of e-cigarettes and, as such, would suggest that consumers exercise caution

Government spokeswoman
The report authors said consumers should stop using the devices until ongoing safety studies reported back within the next year.

The World Health Organisation is among those to raise concerns about the safety of these new types of cigarette substitute, which deliver a nicotine hit in a fine vapour.

And in the past year, US regulators have detained and blocked numerous shipments of e-cigarettes at borders because the devices are not approved.

In the UK, it is illegal to sell e-cigarettes as a "quit smoking" aid, although this is something that is being reviewed.

They are widely available to buy as a "cigarette alternative" over the internet and are sold in a number of places, including some bars and clubs.

Andreas Flouris and Dimitris Oikonomou, from the Institute of Human Performance and Rehabilitation in Greece, say there have been three main reports on e-cigarette safety - one by US regulators, one by a publicly-funded Greek research institute, and another by a private company in New Zealand.

Scant data

The US Food and Drug Administration report expressed concern after finding different brands of the battery operated device delivered markedly different amounts of nicotine vapour with each puff.

The FDA also detected traces of powerful cancer-causing chemicals.

The Greek institute Demokritos took a neutral stance on the products and did not find any evidence of chemical contamination.

Private enterprise Health New Zealand did find cancer-causing chemicals in products, but concluded that overall e-cigarettes should be recommended on the basis of the health risks associated with smoking normal cigarettes.

The researchers told the BMJ: "The scarce evidence indicates the existence of various toxic and carcinogenic compounds in e-cigarettes, albeit in possibly much smaller concentrations than in traditional cigarettes."

Smokers' views on e-cigarettes
Callum Reckless, director at Smart Smoker, a company that sells e-cigarettes, said: "I believe that electronic cigarettes are indeed a safer alternative to smoking real cigarettes."

He welcomed more research into the safety of the products.

A Department of Health spokeswoman said it had been working with regulators to test the products and that none of those tested so far complied with product safety regulations.

She said the government was working to ensure e-cigarettes were labelled and sold appropriately.

"The Department of Health is not aware of any evidence about the long-term safety of e-cigarettes and, as such, would suggest that consumers exercise caution.

"E-cigarettes are not promoted by, or available on, the NHS," she said.

Deborah Arnott, of the charity Action on Smoking and Health, said: "We do need better data on safety and appropriate regulation for e-cigarettes, although these products are certain to be significantly less hazardous than cigarettes, which lead to premature death in half all long-term users."

She said there was demand for the products from smokers - UK estimates suggest around one in ten has already tried them.

Im really hoping that the new British Government see sense. And this article does seem to offer some hope. However, i still find myself somewhat doubtfull.
I have a feeling that they will use as many 'independant' studies as they can to back up the FDA and world health organisations claims on the safety risks of e-cigarettes.
Even if they do decide to allow the sale and use of these devices to continue, i cant help but wonder what will happen to the industry as we know it.
Will the government decide they want to take charge and 'regulate' the industry to their terms. There's a possibility that they might become prescription only devices or that if they can still be bought the costs will spiral out of control.

Suppose no-one knows for sure, i just dont understand how they can actively allow people the choice to buy analogue cigarettes but not allow them that same choice to buy e-cigarettes. Of course i think i know the reason for this, the huge revenue they bring in from taxing tobacco products. Especially here in the uk, which is one of the most expensive and highly taxed countries in the world.
Such a shame they'd take such a huge risk with millions upon millions of people's health.

Thanks for listening and sorry for rambling somewhat! x

Hi champagnekaty
Most of the reports in that article are now out of date and i think the the Greek research institute is being burned to the ground as we speak. If you wan't much more info as to what is happening in the UK you should head over to ukvapers.com and read the latest there. You can fill in the MHRA public response form and add to the UK Petition (we still could do with more people to sign it) which is going to be taken personally by Kate (The Smoking Nun and Hero who is well known by the Veterans here ) to Downing Street.

Kate has an appointment at 10 Downing Street on June 2nd where she will be invited inside to hand the Petition to The Prime Minister.

The UK Vendors and Vapers are fighting with a vengeance and the MHRA are begining to get a bit worried as they have made a lot of mistakes.
Head over there now and join the battle.
Best Regards
