Hey folks. I have been out of the vaping scene for several years, and am wanting to get back into it. I just don't know where to start. I came from an era when eGo's and punched 510's in homemade tanks were "the thing". And most juices seemed to be home brewed in someone's basement.

Anyway, I'm just trying to find out what the new thing is these days. And also, I've got a starter kit picked out but not yet ordered, and want to know if it'll offer what I'm looking for. It's the reactor kit from halo, which I understand is the same as an eleaf istick something or other. My priorities are great flavor, then vapor density, throat hit, and then whatever else is typically important to individuals. One question: people seem to complain about the coils burning out faster with the high vg mix that halo recommends; is there a problem with using a regular 50:50 juice with this particular device?

On a side note, I originally wanted the smok guardian 3 pipe mod, but I can't find it available anywhere that also sells juices, and I'm trying to get everything for Christmas and don't want to order from several sites. I like halo's layout and juice descriptions, and that's why I'm opting for them as my go to for the moment

I think identifying your capabilities/comfort level with vaping would help. Are you a DIY'r do you have any interest in making your own juices, building your own coils, removing batteries and charging swapping out charged batteries etc. Everyone will have their own preference when it comes to that. For me i make my own juice at 80/20 VG/PG never more than 1% EM so the coils dont gunk so easily (prolly why the halo juices kill coils, not the VG) i build my own coils. My fav tank is the Griffin series, about to have the Griffin Plus delivered well 2 of em have the other versions of it. It is far and away the best tank i have ever vaped on, you can build your coils how you want i put out bigger clouds than my brother in law who vapes a huge dripper with alien coils on his rx with my smok r200tc i dont like temp control personally i prefer wattage so that is what i use, if i could tell newbie me and if the products were all available when i started i would start with this and stick with it.

EDIT: Forgot another preference one may have is Mouth to Lung (MTL) or Direct Lung hitting (DL) Ive been a DL since i started even though i was a MTL smoker for 16 years.

Temperature control is cool. Everything else is fading away. Old school rda's are in, tanks are out. Clouds are passe. Singles coils and low watts are where you want to be.

Whoo, here we go. As far as batteries go, it makes no difference to me, but getting into protected vs unprotected, chance of getting a wrapped secondhand(or factory reject) and not really knowing exactly what I have makes me iffy. I may eventually want to become a DIY'er, because I like to tinker with all my gadgets and gizmos, but at the moment, I just want something that works, and works well. I have a set budget of <$100, and don't know enough to piece together a kit and get juice. That's why halo is looking pretty good to me. There seems to be a lot of positive reviews for them. Side question: what is this 1% EM that you're talking about?

For the MTL/DL preference, I guess I used to be a DL guy but I never knew it would matter enough to be worth discussion. What difference does each method give? Only thing I can think of is MTL gives more flavor, while DL causes more vapor. Just the fact that you can hold more vapor in your lungs than just in your mouth. Am I wrong there?

Fwiw, I've "upgraded" my order to the reactor mega, just for the simple fact that it looks more premium than the reactor.

Northern NJ native , Coastal NC now.

I agree 100% with the lower wattage comment , don't care about temp control and i would say RDA's are more out these days than tanks , tanks are more popular than ever imo .

Thats about it though .

My thing when it comes down to the mod is i like to be able to swap batteries out and go on vaping, with the kit you are looking at it has internal batteries (likely 18650's) There are plenty of sources here for trustworthy battery dealers that can be sourced cheap. It will get you started for sure to start with as simple as pre built coils for a tank, but in the long run it will cost you more money due to having to replace the coils and the likely upgrade down the road.

EM = Ethyl Malto a sweetener. In my experience anything over 1% gunks up coils way too fast while 1% provides more than sufficient sweetening (EM also mutes sharpness) have you ever seen sugar burn? pretty much what happens on the coil it bubbles up and gets all crusty and smells bad turns black that is essentially what the high EM juices do to your coil which makes the coil "bad" with premade coil heads you will not be able to simply pull the cotton and dry burn the coil rewick and be on your way.

The MTL/DL is more of a preference which will dictate your tank selection/coil builds etc. How you vape will generally dictate the tank you use as some would be overkill for a MTL vape. I know you are set on getting all your stuff in one single place. To that i am not sure where to send you as i dont buy pre made juice from anywhere so cannot comment/suggest where to look for good juice that also sells a decent dual 18650 mod and a tank that i would recommend. I just bought 2 new mods and 2 tanks from 2 different places but both will be arriving about the same time on Wednesday. Got 2 Smok Cube Ultra's and 2 Geekvape Griffin 25 Plus' coming.

If you were to choose a piece your own starter kit together you would have to get batteries, and a charger as well as the mod and tank. I certainly couldnt tell you if/where to buy juice with lower sweetener that tastes good for sale as most shops dont even come close to divulging the details of what goes into their juice let alone the sweetener ratios.

There are many many options available. If you are wanting more options the TFV8 by Smok has the option to have a build deck as an option as well as prebuilt coils that many people rave about, personally i have one that has been sitting around for a while, just wasnt my thing i prefer Griffins just my $0.02 But at least the TFV8 would give you future options to allow yourself to trial run building your own coils get comfy and still have the option to put on factory made coil heads. Now when it comes to the mod/battery. I personally dont like being limited to what i am doing now but like to have buffer for future options. Being able to change out your batteries means when you reach the number of cycles on the batteries you dont have to buy a new mod you just buy a new set of batteries. That is my opinion on it all. Hopefully this helps you make a informed decision of what is best for you. By no means am i trying to say what/how i vape is best for everyone, just trying to point some things out for you.

I prefer to see newbies starting with a mod with built in batteries. In the mean time figure out liquids, power setting and generally focus on not smoking instead of hardware issues. Then hang out on this forum and read and ask questions and learn about things like battery safety and resistance and all the options available. My vape seems so simple to me now but I can dimly remember (two years ago) when most of this topic seemed impossibly complicated and I'd never take the trouble to figure things out.

Bargain functional gear for me are now:

Eleaf iStick pico (VW, Temperature Control, adjustable)
with LG HG2 18650 batteries (good enough for all above 0,2 Ohm or < 20A !)

For M2L to D2L (restricted) look at these two RBAs:
Wotofo Serpent Mini (Single coil, easy to wick and maintain, good AFC)
SXK Wine (Single Coil, minimalistic - but great)

Both have a small learning curve to get right amount of cotton.
Try 3.5 mm Coils ~ 0,7 Ohm with 28g wire Kanthal A1 (twisted)

For D2L (wide open Draw)
Vaporesso Estoc (pre-made Clapton Coil 0,4 Ohm @ 30Watt)

I am also in the vaping scene for years now - i like the KISS-principle :)

There is so much to choose from these days. Your budget is the limiter though.
I have to agree with the pico for an all round well priced mod.
And, the HG2 seems to be the best battery choice these days. (you will also need a charger)

I won't even go there with the atomizers/tanks. I made my choices in 2011-12, and it's a different world out there now.

Resistance doesn't affect the amp draw on regulated mods. A 20-amp battery is good to about 60w, with any coil resistance.

Why doesn't resistance affect amp draw on a regulated mod?
Watts and battery charge level define the battery amp draw. The chip boosts or bucks three available volts to reach the set watts based on the coil resistance. The calculation:

Watts (+10% to account for chip inefficiency) / battery cutoff voltage (3.2 on most mods) = amps

With series mods the cutoff voltage is multiplied by the number of batteries and the amp draw is per battery, with parallel mods the voltage isn't multiplied but the amps are divided by the number of batteries.

It does, just not the batterys the amp draw goes to the chip. Batteries power the chip, chip powers the coils.
I'd call that "amp delivery" to avoid confusion. When I'm talking about amp draw I'm talking about the strain on the batteries.

Yea i am not the best at teaching/wording things i know so that others understand properly. :D im used to re wording what i say multiple times to try and explain why/how things work that seem so simple/logical to me to say my wife for instance where understanding how/why things work just isnt as easy for her to grasp.
