What's the advantage of wrapping mesh around wicks in kayfun?

Subject says it all. I saw a video of a guy who wrapped 3 wicks in mesh then wrapped the coil on the mesh.

It was not an English video so I don't know if the wicks were silica or ekowool or cotton?

What would the advantage be of wrapping the wicks in ss mesh only where the coil touches?

I have had a few hybrid wick setups. They do have a pure taste that mesh can produce. The inner wicks do help with any wicking issues that mesh can have with certain juices. These inner wicks work better with silica since cotton can still get hot enough to burn inside the mesh. I can also tell you that they do take some work to make sure the coil doesn't short against the mesh as any mesh coil would have... I have since strayed away to just cotton due mostly to the metallic taste (like the tinge in your mouth once in a while from real silver ware), and not from a hot leg or short. And if you ever vape it dry it has a really nasty dryhit!

Some people prefer the taste of a mesh wick but making a strictly mesh wick in a kayfun is damn near impossible. With a "hybrid" type wick, you get the taste of mesh with the wicking ability of whatever it is you have inside the mesh.
this.
also the heat spreads out more so it makes a little more vapor.

im a mesh person but man doing it in the confined space of the kayfun is more pain then its worth. even gave up trying the hybrids.

Ok thanks guys. I couldn't see the advantage since it was still a silica wick? I'm trying to experiment with builds...maybe I might try this on a boring night? Right now I'm running dual coil cotton at 1.1 ohm total (2.2 ohm x2 on 32gauge) no mesh though.

I've only used mesh in a genesis, and I did think the taste was excellent.

Funny you posted this, I made my first hybrid wick for my R100 last night. The flavor profile is different on a mesh hybrid than it is on ekowool. The pear is coming through much more juicy with more tart notes. I noticed this acidity boost with blueberry wild when I tried a mesh/wire rope wick for the PTII as well. I vape mainly fruit flavors so this is a welcome change. Tried XC 132 with a thin wrap of mesh and that one didn't work too well. Right now I have an RSST straw wick chopped down to a smaller height and re-wrapped around an 1/8" drill bit.. I re rolled it a little tighter and twisted a piece of XC-132 though it and now its great. Tried it with cotton first and it was getting a funk to it from the heat of the mesh. This is my favorite wick so far. I get more vapor than just wrapping on the ceramic and the taste is better as well. I'm chain vaping it at .775 ohms with a 3 wrap of 28 gauge and not getting dry hits. So if you're looking for a sharper flavor and a little more vapor I'd recommend it. I've been struggling previously with more vapor and less flavor or more flavor and less vapor and with this I feel like I'm getting both.

whats so hard about the mesh in the smaller space? The hardest part for me is capturing the wire with those tiny screw heads. I got it on my first try with minimal oxidation. Just a few juice burns and a little bit of pulsing and it was solid. Much easier than trying to capture 24 gauge wire on those screw heads

I'm too lazy to find the pic from nttdemented's kfl mesh build, but I can describe it pretty easily. All he did, and its my build of preference at the moment, is coil up a mesh wick that sits right over the air intake. Easy. A couple of pulses on a mech to work out hotspots and add cotton wicks to the ends of the mesh to bring juice from the channels. Done.

My version is a tightly wound mesh wick rolled down to about 1/16. I make a micro coil of about the same diameter with 28g that meters out to about 1.5 ohm and insert my mesh slowly. Fire the coil and work out hotspots by pinching with tweezers. Add cotton and vape my face off.

So are you feeding cotton through the mesh? Or just building cotton up in the side channels and letting it touch the mesh to feed the mesh juice?

it was very easy to do, but I dropped the KF one night and the mesh somehow slid over and just perfectly shorted out and the last thing i have at work is time to tear down a kayfun.

the reason i use a kayfun is convenience and reliability when out of the house, so I stopped doing it as anything that can lower reliability for me is a no go. for others that may be fine but the kayfun is not my go to device, it is just for outside the house/traveling so for me it has to be pretty much 100% reliable or i will just keep using my geni.

well my all time fave is the Gemini from MMV with my megatron and cobra kinda even for second place.

I keep trying other geni's but that lil gemini is so flavorful and rich its almost like drinking the juice out of the bottle.
and the megatron? good God the vapor production out of that thing is insane while still pounding out the flavor.

i like the kayfun, it is a wonderful atty and i think it should be in everyone arsenal, especially newer RBA builders (even more so if you like protank styles), it really changed the game and brought reliable quality rba's with a simple setup to the masses. all in all still a wonderful vape.

plenty of flavor but it just doesnt give me the warm rich vape like a killer geni with a properly set up mesh. the Taifun with mesh came pretty close.

(only my opinions everyones mileage will vary)

More loops over the top of the mesh down into the channels. Think of clothes hanging off a clothesline.
