What's the difference between regular batteries and high drain?

The main difference is the battery chemistry, Lithium Manganese (IMR) vs Lithium Ion. The safer chemistry wrt IMR ensures the battery will not vent with fire in case of a battery failure.

With smaller batteries (16340s and below) IMRs ensure sufficient current is delivered to the atty for our vaping needs. Above 16340 most batteries supply sufficient current to the atomizer without stressing the battery. When it comes to "large" cells like the 18650, the longevity of the higher mAh ratings is often preferred over the lower IMR batts.

Lithium-Ion is not a specific cell chemistry, but rather, encapsulates a broad range of chemistry options. IMR IS li-ion. (Ion Manganese Rechargeable).

The more common cells you see, often sold with protection circuit, are lithium cobalt chemistry, or ICR cells. This cell type is usually the type to be called "li-ion" with no other specific designation.

IMO, for anything smaller than a 17500 size cell, ecig users should be using IMR chemistry cells. They are apt to provide a safer, more reliable vaping experience.

I've been looking a trying a batt other than the lith-ion. Do thers IMR's require a different charger? A couple links to your favorite venders would be nice also.

"high rate" batteries are ones that can handle larger currents. In the case of ecigs, more than 2c (meaning at the rate of 2c it would discharge in half an hour - as opposed to low rate 1c batteries that would completely discharge in one hour)

Why do we need high rate batteries? Three reasons:

1) High rate batteries have less voltage sag. When hit for lots of current, low rate batteries show a drop in voltage. This drop in voltage means a drop in over all power (V*I = P) meaning.
2) All batteries have less capacity at higher rates. High rate batteries exhibit this effect less (pekurert effect) This means a low rate battery will run out of juice quicker.
3) It's often said that it kills a battery to hit it for more power than it can handle. I've had very experienced people who work for EV companies tell me the capacity fade from this isn't as large as you'd think. Discharging until the battery is empty is MUCH worse for it.

Really, if you can afford good batteries then buy them. The QC reject *fire brands are dumpster cells and I don't feel safe keeping them in my house.

What about useing them with a repairable atomizer would it matter? I heard some LR atties will not work without the high drain wonder if that is true?
LR atties were used long before IMRs came on the scene. When Nhaler's first batch hit many were using them on lowly standard 10440s. The battery he supplied in his kit was a Kanger 808 mega e-cig battery.
