What's the secret to making a nice, tight coil where the coils touch?

I know it's been described here and if there is an elaborate method already on the thread, just a link to it would be great. I can build a decent coil but those coils that I see on here that look like they've been mashed together in a hydraulic press are far beyond my skills.
Sure would like to learn though.........?:)

You can't go wrong with this

The trick to it is in fact very simple - wrap slowly and evenly and try to get each successive wrap to hit the previous one say 3/4 of the way across the wire, so that it slips off and lands touching it. Minimum scrunching needed at the end that way.

Stats video (above) is perfect. The way he "over wraps" then backs off the imperfect wraps is some great info for anyone looking to delve into or perfect their micro coiling skills. Great vid stats :)

I use this method then throw a few extra wraps and use statistics video uncoiling method to take some off.

The essential for me is having a backstop at start end. I use a small metal jewelers ~1/16 flathead screwdriver. Handle is easier for me to hold, with old hands, than drill bit, and all my coiling stuff fits into a small case. Another that is easiest for me is 30 ga wire. I can pull it pretty tight winding and get coils snugged without needing to do the heat and squeeze to set after coil is mounted. Being experienced with "old hands," with some arthritis and sensation loss, I can say with confidence that some peeps won't have enough fine motor control to do the heat and squeeze that Stat makes look so easy. Not saying heat and squeeze in not optimal but not required with 30 ga wire.

For me 32 ga is just too fragile and much more difficult to thread into post holes. In addition the coils are much easier to deform handling and the thin wire is much more likely to break cranking down the post screws. In addition the coil gets fragile with repeated dryburns. I've never had a well used 30 ga snap at the post, especially after repeated dryburns, but certainly have with 32 ga.

I would advise that unless you want sub ohm coils best to stick with 30 ga Kanthal or equivalent.

I hold the wire to the 1/16" drill bit with a needle nose pliers, then I use another needle nose pliers to hold the other end of wire. That way I could put a ton of tension on the wire to make the wraps nice and tight. Just make sure you leave some extra wire because you will likely snap off the wire a few times that is in the needle nose pliers.

I haven't made enough coils to compare (nor had the time to play) (probably 20 micro coils - they hold up so well no need to redo them often - that's 30 ga, much stronger than 32) but coil in picture below is vaping fine with gaps. This is the only recent coil where I did a heat and squeeze but only three times. Ran out of patience and time. Some of my other coils have had less gaps and that was accomplished by pulling 30 ga tight while wrapping. I use a little metal jeweler's screwdriver to wrap and I give the coil a few pushes, squishing it against handle, before removing screwdriver.

My 11 wraps, 1/16, 30 ga usually come in a little less than 1.8 ohm but this one is 1.83 ohm due to longer legs. The cotton wick in picture was too sparce so replaced it with thicker wick.

Unless I discover perfectly touching coils to be superior vape using 30 ga at the "standard" LR resistance I mostly use I'm not going to obsess over having them touching. Feisty Alice

Soooooooooo is this for aesthetics? I ask because way less neat coils seem to work very...very well too.

This one is working just fine. I made it in haste before cutting my thumb nail that gets in the way.And I wanted to see how overly back looping would affect the function. I only have about 30 minutes on it. Time will tell but it's vaping fine now.
