When a coil goes bad...

...does it just go bad or does it deteriorate gradually? I hooked my multimeter up to some coils I have laying around. The newer ones are within a few tenths of the coil's ohm rating. Others (the used ones) are reading twice or three times the rating. And what exactly causes the resistance to increase? Is it the wire that deteriorates? I guess I always thought the wire just broke and the resistance went to infinite and that was the end of them. I didn't know there was a "grey area".

Sometimes they go bad slow, sometimes it happens out of nowhere. Its possible your old atties are gunked up with old juice, try soaking them in vodka or grain alcohol and then blow then out through the battery end.

I probably should try an alcohol clean. Lately, I have just been using warm water, letting them dry completely and then dry burning them. Perhaps they'd get cleaner if I use some Everclear or denatured alcohol. Thanks dirty.

Depends on the coils, but research dry burning on here and You tube for the technique. Dry burning may shorten the life of the atty coil a bit, but it makes them vape like new. A good soaking the grain alcohol as dirtyrigger suggested doesn't hurt either.

I have had coils drop in resistance (1.5 to .5, which ruined an eGo battery) and climb high enough to be worthless with my batteries. I think it depends what goes wrong with them.

One of my vendors stated the resistance of wire in an atty or carto will go high as it deteriorates, or go very low if the coil collapses on itself. You already know what happens if it just breaks and goes open.

I've got an atomizer crapping out on me right now
I'm vaping a Provari so I can keep checking the atomizer resistance
When new the atomizer was 1.6ohms
Now its at about 1.1ohms and giving me error codes so I have to keep lowering the voltage
Its Toast

Also atomizers can just pop
Or the resistance can increase until they are worthless
