Besides a tight draw and a different taste, I can also tell that I have to replace my coil, by looking at the juice in the tank. It's usually a lot darker. This is not just caused by a crusted coil, but also by the wick being dirty.

Depending on the liquid you are using in the Protank the coil can last more than a week or 5 - 7 days only. My ADV is Vanilla Dream and it is one of those juices where I have to change the coil after 5 days. However, I take the used coils apart and re-build them.

I don't recommend dry burning them, 'cause it can melt the insulation, which wouldn't taste nice at all.

Try rebuilding them yourself if you haven't already. I used to get a much better taste, plus more clouds. That is until I switched to RDA's and RTA's

No real point in rebuilding the Kangers when you can buy a new coil for like $2.....plus its a pain in the .... (speaking from experience with the Kanger Protank mini)

Agreed, at less than $2 per coil there is no need to rebuild them. However, you should regularly clean the atomizer.

Really, you won't have to ask, when the flavor begins to change, it's time.

Plus if caught early enough, there's a better success rate of reusing the coil again. Plain old hot water trickling over the removed one for 4-5 minutes will clean it up fairly well. The best way to dry one is, if one has a laptop that's often used, place the coil on a small box or book, high enough so that the exhaust fan from the laptop will blow warm air directly over the coil surface. In just a few hours, it's dry.

Also, when swapping coils, if there's a better flavor wick material available, swap the loose wick on top for silica or other braided wick. And change it after every few top offs, that helps with flavor as well. I always have this from the scraps of coil rebuilding. That's getting the most out of the costly wick material. Wire is cheap, wick isn't.

Since you did not state whether you PT is a version 1, 2, or 3, I will assume it to be v1 or v2.
The coil will last a week or more depending on the juice and your vaping habits.
I replace mine:
when the vapor production has diminished,
when I begin getting burnt (dry vapes) taste
when it begins flooding (gurgling or juice in my mouth)
Do Not throw the old atomizer heads (coils) away. They can be cleaned and reused many times.

Replace when you get a burnt taste. I buy authentic coils from ebay which are just over $1 each, but i don't use the wicks that come with them anymore. They are so inconsistent lasting anywhere between 1 day to 1 week. I simply just use organic cotton as the wick while using the existing coil. You get more flavor, taste is much cleaner and the wick doesn't burn for days. I use this method with my mini protank 2 and the cost is dirt cheap.

the flavor wick or the wick inside the coil? I do replace the flavor wick, but don't mess with the coils.
