Hi Lis. 
Fortunately I have a second hard drive on that computer and although it's not up to date it has the info that I need that crashed on the first drive. It looks like I will get the files that I want, transferred now.
I have had a home computer since 1982, Jan. I know a few tricks too.

and why not create a network and get the files from the old pc to the new one ?
Eh, because I'm familiar with the method that I am using now and I don't know how to set up a network.

We got a network here and three computers plus and external hard drive so we can grab all over the place!!!

that's not so complicated but if you are familiar with your method that's ok , less risk than running a network in case a worm be hidden on the old pc

Jerry, setting up a network in Windows is fairly easy if you already have the network cards, just need some Ethernet cables. Even easier with recent puters that come with wireless built-in. But then you need a wireless router (a hub), a radio that sends and receives. Those run for $20 at the cheapest, then no cables. I copy my important files on 3 puters for backup.

Then, he's halfway there, only needs a wireless adapter for each puter if not already built-in. Those are cheap too, about $10 for a USB "G" adapter. Or, he can plug the puters into router with Ethernet cable.
