Thanks. So do I. It's $240 million.

I'm a sporadic player. If the jackpot is big enough and I remember, I give the state education fund a little money. One of these days it would be nice if the state thanked me. (They don't even have to thank me 240,000,000 times. I'd be very happy with half.)

DH always goes for the big jackpots.....me I would be happy with a 100,000.00 not him.....LOL

Hey y'all

Just stopping by to say howdy...not gonna stay long cause I'm exhausted.

(Have to completely agree with Sun, it was amazing, and so much fun to meet everyone. ECF-ers are just as nice in person :) )

Hiya Chris :):) Night Chris :):)

It would be nice if our state actually used the money for state education! :(

The odds are terrible. When New York joined MegaMillion, there was an article discussing the probability of winning. The one that stuck with me was —— If you know only one person in Canada and they put the name of everyone in Canada on little slips of paper and put them in a hat, you'd have a better chance of pulling your friend's name than of winning the jackpot on a $1 bet.

I'm not going to buck odds like that unless the potential reward is BIG!

Hah, you too? When RI started the lotteries back in the early 70s, they told us that the money would be going to education. Of course we didn't believe them and still don't, as our property taxes go up every year and 75 - 80% of it goes to the schools.

And that totally irks me every time they go up because it's for the schools!

You are an instigator, Sun.

Jane, the odds of winning the big prize in Powerball are 1 in 146,107,962. I stopped buying Powerball when it went up to $2 a ticket and switched to MegaMillions, which is still $1.

Each state is different. Pennsylvania, for example, uses their for senior citizens.

In NY, the way it works is that the money goes to pay the education budget. This then frees money from general funds to be spent elsewhere. In other words, it isn't incremental money for education. But, if they didn't get it from the lottery, they'd have to get it elsewhere. In 2010, the state budget had something like a $2 billion shortfall. The made up half of it by adding $1.60 more in taxes on every pack of cigarettes. If it weren't for the lottery, it probably would have been $3.00.

(Every time I think about that, I become more convinced that the government does not want people to quit smoking.)
