I haven't done any sewing in years (and years and years). I was going to get rid of the sewing machine a few years ago but decided I'd keep it until I made new cage covers. It turns out that even with the instruction book, I can no longer figure out how to thread this machine. Now it's in the pile of stuff for the thrift shop.
So I decided that the best way to do this is to fold the sheets I'm using in half and insert a series of grommets every 6" or so. This will allow me to run cords through 2 or 3 pairs to secure the cover at night. (Brass grommets do have zinc and a little lead in them but the grommets themselves will be well out of beak range.)
If you ever need help in this area, I am getting very good at hammering down grommets.
What I am not as good at is making the holes for the grommets to go through. After trying a variety of things, I find a combination of steak knife and scissors works best. So, zelda, I have this which I bought last night and now am not using. Let me know if I should send it to you for your current "project." It's pretty heavy duty and should have no trouble punching holes in rocks.
