Amazing, isn't it. Just about everything I know about the Interwebs and coding and stuff is from being a member at 3 places.

speaking of which, one of my external hard drives stopped showing up on my desktop. It still had lights on, indicating that it thought it was working. I disconnected it yesterday when I had my computer pulled out. I was connected by Firewire rather than USB. The Mac Mini has 1 Firewire port. Is there any way to determine if the problem is with the computer's port, the drive or the cord other than dragging the components around town to be tested?

have you tried "disk utility " it is under GO/ utility

Thanks. Will do (as soon as I plug it back in.)

It's just a backup anyway (which is why I've waited a month or so to even pull it out.) The Mini's hard drive is small so I keep my videos & most pics on an external drive and back them up to another. Everything that's on my computer gets backed up by Time Machine. And the really, really important stuff gets zipped and sent to my Mobile Me account.

If Armageddon comes, having access to computer files will be the least of anyone's worries. Other than that, I won't be thwarted by a fried MuthaF'ingBoard or a dead drive again.

A vexing problem no doubt. I take it that you have rebooted? It is unlikely that the cord has gone bad, unless you had some little furry creatures chewing on it. They usually get disinterested in it once they hit the coax sheath of a firewire cable, preferring bird food or even belly button lint by a wide margin. Assuming that it is connected back up to the MMini and is powered, and the MMini boots up, do you notice any blinking of the drive light during that process?
