Well, they are like people Ralph not every diet fits every dog, the chi's pretty much live on chicken and are pickier than any cat. I demand that the cat feed himself, not so much that he is old. His favorite is fresh chipmunk. Not pleasant to watch though.

Used to have chipmunks here, too. ONE cat (that I fed!) wiped the whole colony out! It was a slaughter!!!

A cat will torment it's prey before it eats it, it's not a pretty sight to see. Years ago, I saw a cat torturing a squirrel that it had caught. I was so angry and disgusted, that I chased the cat away and killed the squirrel, to put it out of it's misery.

Gotta love a working cat. Ours gets fed, more now than before, he was a feral cat when we got him 12-13 years ago, we took him to the shop because we needed something to keep the mice away. He took care of that well. He's an outdoor cat in the country and we haven't a clue how old he is now. He's semi retired, sleeps all day and he always has kibble available. In his prime, spring and fall he never touched the food but was pretty fat anyway.

My cat would catch mice just to play with them....never ever killed one.

This is true. They are all a bit different. When I got my corgi, the breeder told me how to feed her. I thought she was nuts at first, but then I started reading up on it and it made more sense. Most dogs prefer meat. However, some get used to eating the dog chow and have a hard time transitioning.

If my cats were outside cats, I would want them to feed themselves too. :) But they are city cats. It would be like:

if they caught a mouse or something.
