Oh yeah, lots of passive solar heat in here, Kent. I have to keep the blinds closed a lot of the time, or it will get too hot in here.

I bet!! It can get quite hot. One of the things that Booth did on the southern elevation is put in an overhang for the top floor and an 'eyebrow' (a built in sun block - like an 'overhang') for the bottom and it cuts out the summer sun which rides higher in the summer sky. So it's cool in the sunroom in the summer and I've seen it as high as 95 in the winter when the sun runs lower in the sky, when it was 0 out. Pretty amazing actually and the extra materials for the sun room was not that much vs. having actual solar panels on the roof, etc. The 'odd time' is in the Autumn mostly when the sun is beginning to move below the overhang and eyebrow protection and it's still hot out. Then we open the side porch door because we want to keep the solar aspect 'tempered' so to speak.

eta.... night Jerry.

 It's a fun toy too. You can see foot prints and hand prints for minutes after. I've seen deer on the tree line at night - regular night vision won't pick them up too well when they're in the tree line unless they're on the move. This picks up their body heat. DW had her down vest on - totally cool with her head and legs glowing

Sounds like fun to me :laugh: That would make some neat pics!!

I'm calling it a night. Goodnight, Kent, Renee, Jan and Lis. CUL RM

Goodnight Jerry, sweet dreams :)

I thought so and it wouldn't take a long time. Two bedroom house with family room. Picture window was done a few years back. Not counting the two in the garage, we'd have to do five windows.

Only 5.....that's just not right!! I have twice that in the living room!!

I would like a sun room in the winter time......maybe then I wouldn't freeze all the time.

We have 6 windows on the north side plus the front door, which is the living room. I would love to block off one set of them and move the door but that is a lot of construction. Would be nice to not have the door in the middle of the wall.

I hear you.... we were 'lucky enough' to be building in the wake of the first gas/energy crisis so that's where the focus was at the time. There was a time when people didn't even consider insulation - my grand parents house had none but they always had the furnace full blast in the winter :) cheap energy.... When my brother in law and I tore down the walls - they were filled (not on purpose) with coal dust - it was a railroad town :) Sister got the house after my grandparents died and so we insulted, dry walled, etc. Was hoping to find jars of gold and silver  that didn't happen  Lots of hooch in the celler though. Grandpa made wine, whiskey and beer. :)

The house isn't that old and the guy who built it keep it to one window in a room except one bedroom has two.

The picture window has two little side ones to it so I can open them but, as I said, we had it done already--the one we had to hire done.

It's really nice. DW has a beach chair set up in there  But at night it can drop to around 60 - like Jerry said - windows regardless of the type are still the biggest area of heat loss, even though they are solar collectors during the day and it doesn't necessarily have to be a sunny day. But 3 cloudy days in a row and our other heaters start to carry the load.... three sunny days in a row and the heaters don't even come on though... :)

Our walls are full of lath and plaster....LOL His grandma did have all the walls sheet rocked. Over the lath and plaster and the ceilings lowered to help. But they didn't insulate the space between the new and old ceiling

We never found any gold either.....geez  At least you found some liquor!!

Fall arrived yesterday- first frost warning last night, so i had to move all my front porch tropical plants inside. Living room is a jungle and my porch is bare til next spring. Heater is on for the first time this year.

I got two plants in the living room and son had to turn the furnace on while we were gone. One was looking really droopy when I walked in yesterday. I did water them before I left but the one was so dry it two big glasses of water yesterday and one this morning. I'm going to check the dirt to see how moist it is later.

I definitely looks better this morning!

Daughter #2 failed to get up and come take #3 to school.... again.... second time this week. :grr::grr: So, the day is already off to a great start... :glare:

I think some fancy shmancy crepes for breakfast sounds good...
