A quick history lesson:

Before WWII, college freshmen at many schools, had to wear a beanie, during their first year. It was an initiation by the upper classmen. Immediately after the war, the practice stopped, since many college freshmen were war veterans. No one was going to tell a guy who had fought on Iwo Jima, that he had to wear a beanie. lol
