Its not quite that bad. For instance, I am doing a complete reload of an XP machine, with Office 2007, all MS service packs and updates (total of 151 updates), Adobe Acrobat 8 (+16 updates to get it current), Java, Flash, Symantec AV, etc. I started at 6:15 and its 9:50 now. I have the stuff I bolded done. I have about an hour to go. So, will I charge the customer 4.5 hours... Negative.... Maybe 2.5. But it does tie me down here for that length of time. However, there is some screw off time waiting for downloads and other stuff to happen... Watching the paint dry.
So, it's not straight time-clock stuff, but I can do a few other things while I am doing it.

Ralph, are you at home or at someone's house or place of business?? That download time is still time you have to wait. You are way too lenient.
Yes. The customer has booked that time. You can't do work for anyone else while you are there. ETA: And Norrie agrees with me so, obviously, we are right!
At home.... I can brush my teeth, start laundry, and other important stuff. If I was stuck at a customer site I would be charging for all of my time. There are exceptions though. Sometimes I discount some time if there are excessive hours.

Ah, but I am at home tonight. I often bring the long running stuff home. Like an infected machine is much better dealt with here. Simply because scan times to find infections take hours and hours, often running multiple tools to get them clean. I wont do a machine reload at the customer site unless its a server.

Our software at work is the biggest piece of garbage you could ever pay for. It replaced a system that worked fantastic and now it takes twice as long at least to do what we used to do. Add the extra crap that certain customers want, new fork lift computers for the shippers, and an update coming this weekend that the I.S. guys are even crossing their fingers on, along with a major co-pack job starting in a few months and new software to learn for them...................I could go on and on but suffice it to say............life has been pretty hectic.
I miss you guys and tried to get on this week but with having to do the front desk two days, it took me until tonight to get halfway caught up and I still have stuff to do.

Yep, hectic here too. Banking rules are driving some major changes at one of my clients', and that has really shot my nights and weekends all to hell. No downtime allowed and MAJOR changes mandated by about 20 banks, (federal banking rules extending down to their vendors).
Not much of a home life... Oh well, what do we do? ..... My entire job involves crossed fingers Norie, so I can sure relate to that.

We pulled the first 2 or 3 hours of pick lists for Monday's loads..................thinking that was a mistake. I think we shoulda pulled ALL of em!!
