When I was at a woman's service magazine (about 12 yrs ago), the publisher insisted that all reps wore suits every day (even casual Friday) in case they had to go on a call. Dark suits & ties for the men, business-type suits for the women. Lots of people tried to convince him that times had changed but he was adamant. Problem was that they were calling on 25-year-old media planners who already thought the mag was a magazine for dowdy old fuddy-duddy housewives. That policy did a great job of reinforcing that image.

Times have changed and for the better, Jane. On weekends, I used to go motorcycle riding with a few friends. One of the bank's executive officers lived nearby and saw our little "gang" cruise by. The following Monday, I was called into the manager's office and I was told that 'bankers do not ride motorcycles'.

I confess...I like those power suits. No vents, silk ties, shiny black shoes and an attache...hair slicked back, I looked good and smelled good. Psychologically, I felt smarter and more sophisticated. I love Ralph Lauren stuff, but can't afford it.

Doesn't mean I'd wear them grocery shopping...with those diagonal shopping carts.

I don't think the 25-yr-old media planners have any difficulty figuring out who was wearing a suit and tie because he was cutting edge/interested in fashion and who was wearing it because that's what people were supposed to wear to the office.

Coming out of college, I wore a blue suit to an interview at....Apple. Lessons learned.

When I went independent consultant, I dressed "down" to sports coats, ties and slacks cuz I was in the burbs and nobody wore suits. Yes, one should dress for the audience in mind.
