Discuss.

The petition:
WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Recognize electronic cigarettes as an effective alternative to smoking and support job creation in this new industry.
Electronic cigarettes have just begun to capture the attention of the American public, 24% of whom are regular cigarette smokers. This new technology has shown promise in reducing the adverse health effects associated with smoking, while delivering an experience that can satisfy the cravings which make quitting so difficult. It's no secret that smoking accounts for nearly $100 billion dollars in healthcare costs annually- not to mention the productivity lost when smokers fall ill or pass away due to smoking related diseases. The administration's support for this emerging technology would pave the way for reducing the societal costs of smoking, while creating jobs in a new sector which has grown significantly in the past two years. Support job creation and deficit reduction by signing now!

So I guess I'm confused. Does this mean that a small group of ecig and juice manufacturers have to submit their products to the FDA for testing with a big hefty check (FDA testing isn't free) and what? And nothing is going to move forward until someone coughs up the money for testing? This is what I don't understand. They don't want to get behind a product because while its a neat idea....cigs might be safer? Ugh. Does anyone here have any first hand knowledge about how FDA testing and approval occurs? I only have supposition on my side and my assumptions are not pretty, and probably not very fair either.

I mean...how does one get through to folks like Dr. Lawrence R. Deyton, M.S.P.H, M.D., Director of the Center for tobacco Products at the FDA...that there is merit here and it should be pursued. Not just for the growth of the industry, but for the sake of everyone who has had success and for those who desperately need it.

What upsets me is that the white house forwarded this petition onto the fda. This petition was AGAINST the fda. they essentially brushed it off their shoulders and wrongly gave our petition to the very party it was against. This whole situation that we've been dealing with over the last few months is a slap in the face to the court of appeals and the judge that ruled against the FDA's ridiculous claims and plans of action.

I got this email and was ticked.

There have been studies, including many that were conducted FOR the FDA, on nicotine, propylene glycol, and vegetable glycerin. All three ingredients are in tobacco cigarettes (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin being humectants), and have been tested through inhalation. None have been found to "significantly affect human biological functions." But what e-cigs DON'T have are the 100+ other ingredients that tobacco cigarettes contain - just check the Phillip Morris website where they list all the ingredients. E-cigs also don't produce the by-product tar, which has been proven to be the cause of the coating of the lungs.

And the bit about they don't know how much nicotine people inhale? There have been studies on that also. The amount the body absorbs has been measured to be about 10% of what your body absorbs from a similar nicotine-strength cigarette.

I'll be writing Dr. Deyton (Director of the Center for Tobacco Products) directly with links to all the studies that can easily be found on the internet. His email is listed on the FDA website.

Yup. Ticked. And I'm the type of girl who will get NERDY on ya if you provoke me!

That's a shame. It seems like they are unwilling to recognize e-cigs as a healthier alternative. Shamelessly associating it with cigarettes. Even read how they started to state facts as to how cigarettes kill such and such amount of people etc. It really didn't make any sense to how it addresses why they are not considering keeping e-cigs from being banned.

Wanna bet $10,000 j/k

Lol. I'm as sure as I know he cannot give us he real birth certificate. Lol. Not trying to get OT but I'll drum up a nice response to his BS. He doesn't want to give e cigs a try cause he's afraid he would quit smoking and join our lovely forum. He then would have to bring all of our magical devices with him in front of the camera and tell the world he REALLY quit smoking. :)

Liquidsound, as long as you lay the blame on one person or one party, you're just perpetuating the system. The players are superficial. It's the game itself that's broken. Our political division is manufactured to keep us invested in a veiled corporate oligarchy. If we ever hope to improve our government we have to be able to rise above it long enough to see its true face.

That being said, Big Tobacco is far too essential to our economy for smoking to ever be eradicated. It's all a shell game.

ecigs=less smokers; less smokers=less tax $$$. think about the real impact. Ive read there are around 3 million regular vapors, lets just be conservative and say there is only 1 million. Staying conservative, lets just say out of that one million all of them only 1 PAD smokers. The average state tax per pack is $1.46 in addition to the federal tax which averages $1.01. $1.46 + $1.01 = $2.47. $2.47 X 1,000,000 = $2,470,000.00/day. Look at that over a year and its almost $1,000,000,000 in lost tax dollars. Your Health<Your Money in their eyes.

@davelog - Maybe. Just my opinion. Sure it's a shell game. It's broken and we will never see its true face if we don't hold the manufactured players accountable for their letters addressed to us. I'm not trying to eradicate smoking; its not going anywhere. What I do know is exactly how our players work. I keep the books for one if that tells you anything. And he isn't a small fish in our pond. Just sayin.

I can tell you one thing. We shouldn't just roll over and hope it heals itself. With enough squonking, they will eventually fill our tanks. :)
