I thought maybe someone like me was snowed in today and might be patient enough to take the time to explain something to me.

1. I've heard 'mods' referred to and heard that they are nearly indestructable. Are they something people make in their shop, or are they something people buy? If they can be purchased, any recommendations?

2. what makes them more durable than an e cig?

3. if they are something people can buy, are any compatable with V4L cartomizers?

4. How do they work, how do they differ from the V4L ecigs that I am currently using?

5. I've heard some references to them lasting entire weekends without needing recharging. True??

6. what are the pros and cons?

7. Any other details or info would be much appreciated.

THANK YOU!!!

Battery mods come in all sizes, shapes, & colors. You can make your own or you can buy them pre-made. I have two... the Silver Bullet & the BB. PM me if you want to know where to buy them.

2. what makes them more durable than an e cig?

The two I have are machined out of billet aluminum, which makes them pretty tough. Someone on another sub-forum reported that they dropped their SB without knowing it and ran over it with a pickup, but it still works.

3. if they are something people can buy, are any compatable with V4L cartomizers?

Most mods can be, with the use of an adapter. VK cartos is all I use.

4. How do they work, how do they differ from the V4L ecigs that I am currently using?

They are bigger. The SB is huge! They are bigger because they are designed to hold larger rechargeable batteries. I use a 2400mah battery in the SB and a 900mah in the BB.

5. I've heard some references to them lasting entire weekends without needing recharging. True??

It really depends on how much you use it.

6. what are the pros and cons?

The only "pros" are less recharging and the "cool factor", if you're into that (I'm not). The "cons" are mostly the size and that in public, some people think they look like some kind of drug addict, which we are, as it turns out!

7. Any other details or info would be much appreciated.

THANK YOU!!!

I've answered in red above.

not snowed in but I'll take a shot!

  1. Both. Mods started out as modified laser pointers and such but basically it's an atomizer adapter stuck onto a rechargeable battery receptacle of some sort with super cheap rechargeable batteries. There are a few different shops that offer up mass produced mods these days, I have one and love it but am not sure if it's right to post about it here (I think we are supposed to keep V4L stuff in the V4L forum, but if you want to discuss my suggestion shoot me a PM). V4L is in the works on their own mod and it sounds like it's going to be awesome but I would guess it's not going to be out for another month or two.
  2. What makes them more durable is that they are built out of pretty tough housing with fairly cheap batteries. So instead of paying $10-$15 for replacement batteries you are paying $2. They tend to be built out of stainless steel and such and some are even completely mechanical (no wires at all) so they can withstand bumps and bruises a lot better.
  3. A lot of the shops that put them together have swappable adapters for their mods and have recently started adding 808 adapters to their mods. So yes, if you find the right one you can get an cartomizer adapter for it, although the draw may differ from what you are used to with V4L.
  4. The mods are all manual switches. They usually have a batt compartment that unscrews and you slide in fresh batts. The batts look like AA or AAA batteries but they are actually 3.7v Lithium Ion batteries (much like the V4L batts) and the batteries usually last a little longer and produce "fresh batt" vapor for longer periods of time, meaning that the batteries are usually a little better at holding their charge and you get that freshly charged battery feeling for a bit longer than you do with the regular batts. Kinda like what you get with the XLs but I still think the mods are better than those even.
  5. I would assume this is based on the vaper and the mod of course. My wife uses V4L batts exclusively and is a much lighter vaper than I am and I'm pretty sure that if I gave her my mod for a day she could get through the whole day on one batt. But I go through typically 2 batts a day. To me the batts are much easier to carry around though. I throw a fresh one in the chamber and stick 2 more fresh ones in the coin pocket in my jeans. I usually don't have to use all three in a day but the third one is there for safety. There are mods that use bigger batteries that last even longer but I like the size of the one I have currently, it's the perfect mix for me with size vs. batt time. And the chargers for the batt are typically multichargers. My charger has a spot for 2 batts and it takes 2 hours for them to charge. I have 6 batts and can charge my whole lot in just over 6 hours and it will last me 2 days easy without having to worry bout charging again.
  6. Pros: better batt time, better batt power, more durable (I couldn't imagine my mod dying on me at all in the next 6 months, knock on wood, the only thing I might need to buy is more batts, but at $2 a piece that's no big deal), cheaper batts, easier charging, easier battery portability, no LEDs (on mine at least), nobody's gonna come close to mistaking this thing for a cig, people say they look more like crack pipes. Cons: a little larger than the regular batts, initial investment is pretty steep.
  7. There are also 5v mods, they're like walking around with a portable passthrough. But I'm scared to venture into those woods as I feel like once you get used to that you could never go back to anything smaller like the 3.7v mods or even regular V4L batts. Right now I can switch pretty seemlessly between my mod and my V4L batts without feeling like I'm missing anything. I think once you go 5v you'll never be satisfied with anything less.
Is that a good response? ;)

Hiya, ive just purchased my first mod but it hasnt arrived yet...heres the small amount that i know in relation to your questions...(snowed in here too!!!)

1. I've heard 'mods' referred to and heard that they are nearly indestructable. Yes and No...yes they last a long time depending on what you get but some have problems.eg. with switches

Are they something people make in their shop, or are they something people buy? you can buy them on alot of sites...
If they can be purchased, any recommendations? I went with a protege...its 3.7v(the same pretty much as a regular cig battery but imagine the first puff from a freshly charged battery all the time...thats the plus to that voltage...it will last about a day on one battery)

2. what makes them more durable than an e cig? Some are made from all mechanical parts so no messing about with internal pieces...ive never made one so u need an expert on it or a modder to ask about the innards of one!!!they are durable because of the material they are made from too...(varies but usually alot tougher than ur average battery)

3. if they are something people can buy, are any compatable with V4L cartomizers?yes almost all should be???i mean this in the way that you can buy one with threads for another model and buy an adaptor for your particular model...(the ggts- cloud9vaping.co.uk - is out soon which is compatible for all without adaptors as far as im aware. im getting a protege with 801 threads and buying 510/901/kr8 adaptors)

4. How do they work, how do they differ from the V4L ecigs that I am currently using?they differ in that no. 1 they are BIGGER...there are some marginally bigger and others that are quite big...the models that run on 3.7v are a bit bigger as they take just one 3.7 battery but there are others 6v+ mods that take 2 3v batteries making them bigger and wider). The batteries can vary lasting from 6-7 hrs using high voltage to 2-3 days using 3.7v batteries...its a big variant but they definitelylast LONGER...I cannot comment yet but they are generally said to produce more vapor and throat hit but some at higher voltage lose flavor...

5. I've heard some references to them lasting entire weekends without needing recharging. True?? yes true for some...depending on which batteries and what voltage...

6. what are the pros and cons?the pros are that you have 1 battery and just need atomisers carts and juice...u bring ur battery out in the morning and probably dont need a new one that day at least(or u just carry a spare rechargable battery with u)...with ur v4l cartomizers you get it easy...hardly any top ups and no charges while out and about...lots of people will tell you that once u try 5+ volts u wont go back...im sure this is true but ive yet to experience it...im buying mine for convenience and to make sure i dont go back to smoking having the perfect hit every time is a big bonus for me...im sick of my 510 going wonky!

the cons are that they are bigger and wider and expensive depending on what you get. They can kill atomisers until u get used to them at high volts...you may need special attys for 6+voltage...some have reported SOME battery mods turning on in pockets causing burning/mini fires...BUT some come with a locking thing to stop this.

7. Any other details or info would be much appreciated.

If you look up my post 3.7 versus 5+ mods it has alot of info people gave me on the different mods...theres also a link in there to the many out there...

any other questions that i can help you with just ask : o)

hope ive helped

I use my mod here at home a lot, it's a 6V, I guess the power is actually at 5? I don't know. It's kicks out vapor like mad, but I don't have any problem at all switching back over to my VK batteries, even the original short batteries I got 4 months ago. I use my PT quite a bit and I couldn't live without my VK for being out and about. My mod is no fun to try and use on the road, it's nearly impossible, so the VK is what really works for me for that.

I get spoiled to things pretty easy, but the switching back and forth has been no problem at all for me.

It might very well do that, Taryn! I bought my first mod because my friend recommended it to me and I bought the 2nd one for that Doomsday scenario of ecigs being banned.

Of course, you know I'll be on there ordering one the minute they come in. I can't wait to see them!

yeah, me neither, although it will be hard to pry my Protege out of my hand!!!

I wonder if the new VK1 coming out will make those types of mods obsolete!!

First I heard of that, but that's what I'm waiting for. It seems like most other mods need an adapter to use the cartos. Aren't there problems attributed to using an adapter sometimes? It would be cool to have one that is dedicated to VK cartos.

THank you guys SO much for explaining all of that to me!!
HueySDS- you can just buy your batteries at any harware store? I'm looking into getting a few mods for doomsday prep. I want it as simple as possible, and of course if V4L come out with their own, I'll probably buy about six. For now I just want one for JUST IN CASE!!
Thanks again to everyone who responded.

No, sorry I didn't explain that better. You can get the batts online at batteryjunction.com, and I heard that you can get them at a batteries+plus store, but haven't been to my local batteries+plus. I got the startup kit for my mod and then bought 4 extra batteries at batteryjunction.com

What I want is a mod that will be good for doomsday situations, I can use my V4L carts on, and can buy batteries easily for (online or otherwise). I've never dripped and don't really want to. Does the protogy fit this description?

The protege does, get it with the ace/kr808 adapter and you can pop your V4L carts on there all day (which is exactly what I do). That being said I'm sure the VK1 will also fit that description, but we'll just hafta see.
