I think the best way for you to learn about vaping is to go into one of your local brick and morter shops and ask them to explain to you what all of this means. When I first quit smoking and trying vapes, I went to a local shop in here in LA and they explained all the different types of devices I could use etc. It was very helpful. I actually started with something more than what you are trying, it consisted of a battery and a refillable tank that I could fill with whatever flavor e-juice I wanted. I was hooked after learning I wasn't limited to some cig look a like with a cartridge in it.

Hey, folks:

It's been awhile since I was here, thanks to TWO deaths in the family and bedbugs. (The joys of living in Manhattan.) I just now sent off my order to Mt Baker. Thanks ever so much for that tip.

Holy crap; this "vaping" stuff is baffling. I didn't, in the end, go with a starter kit after all, because I could see that after a starter kit, I'd want to have something better, and because I'm price-sensitive, I didn't wanna pay for two set-ups. I went straight for the put-it-together-yourself set. Argh. That was frustrating and scary, worrying that I left something out.

So this is what I ended up with:

Kanger Pro Tank 3
Kanger Replacement Tube for Protank 3
Kanger Evod Twist (mAh: 1600 mAh)
Kanger Evod USB Charger
Boge 5pc LR 510 Cartomizer XL Pre-Punched 2 Holes
5pk Kanger Replacement Coils for Protank 3 (Resistance: 1.8 Ohm)
A lotta juice

Please tell me I didn't leave anything out, thus preventing me from smoking when it all gets here; I'll be terribly depressed if, after all this time and work, I don't end up with a working unit.

And many, many thanks to all the people who helped me out with this. I greatly appreciate all your input with this baffling stuff. Now I know how people feel when they come to me and they want a computer and their heads are ready to explode.

The set up that you got is fine. The Protank 3 is a good tank. I have tried a bunch of different tanks and that was my favorite and I was using that up until I switched to the Aspire Nautilus. What strength of nicotine did you order? I quit just a little less than 3 months ago and I found that 24 mg juice helped me to not missing smoking at all. If you went lower, you will have more cravings, but for the most part you can simply vape more to get past the cravings, that is unless you went really low and got something like 6 mg. That level of nicotine is really for those who have been off cigarettes for quite a while or are using more powerful gear like mods which will vaporize much more juice.

Some people are perfectly happy for years with the same type of gear that you ordered. Some are gear heads (like me) who will always want to trade up to bigger, better, faster, newer. In the under three months since I quit, I went from cig-alikes (blu Plus+), to a setup similar to yours (Halo Triton) to a box mod (iStick). Do I regret the path I took? Sure, I would have saved a lot of money if I didn't take all those intermediate steps and continually upgrade my gear, but I'm ok with that.

And you made a good choice ordering from Mt Baker Vapor. Even though they are located in WA, they do ship 2 day priority mail. You will get shipment notification literally just several hours after you place your order, even on weekends. And for some reason (good for us), the USPS is spot on as far as delivery with shipments from Mt Baker Vapor to NY. The last order I placed with them was on a late Saturday night. Sunday morning I got shipment notification, and obviously the USPS didn't get the package until Monday. The postman dropped the package off in my mailbox Wednesday. And this is consistent with the other times I have ordered from them.

Looks like great choices to me. You will indeed have everything that you need to start vaping. The only thing that I might suggest is having one more battery. That way you will have one to use while the other is charging :thumb:

Not sure that you will be able to use the prepunched cartos though. Those have holes punched in them and are made for carto tanks.

I haven't had much experience with the cartomizers that you ordered, but the coils are the one thing that will need to be replaced. How often will depend on how much juice you use on a daily basis and the type of juice (darker or sweeter juices will gunk up coils quicker). In my experience, you will know when a coil needs to be replaced because the amount of vapor that it produces will drop considerably. Coils typically last me about 2-3 weeks or so (I only vape about 3 ml a day even though I do use a sweeter juice). So if you assume that a coil will last you two weeks, you will have enough coils for your Protank 3 to last you 3-1/2 months (7 coils x 2 weeks = 14 weeks). The Protank 3 will come with two coils.

You could sit for months looking at Ecigs and taking recomendations but you wont know what you want or like until youve tried it.

Your set up is fine! and you have everything you need to hit the ground running. my advice is fill it up and enjoy! you will soon get the hang of it, then find what you like/dont like ready for your upgrade (IF you even need/want one)

Good luck with Vaping and enjoy :)

Jsea, SalemGold, and BigDvon, you've made me so happy, I might tinkle! Thank cow! I've been tearing my hair out over here, thinking I botched my order. Whew! (I TOTALLY had no idea about holes vs no holes; I couldn't find them explained anywhere, but rationalized that there needed to be holes in order for the smoke to pass through. I guessed wrong, huh?) I went with 18mg because the V2 people had told me to go with 12, and that seemed way too light to me (I smoke two packs a day (my best friend killed himself last summer, and I've not handled it well). Since she insisted on 12mg, I was too scared to go with 24mg, even though I was pretty sure that that's what I shoulda done. Well, I'm hoping not to be doing this permanently anyway; I've only been smoking since September (I'd quit for five years), so with luck, this'll be temporary.

Thanks, jseah, for letting me know about your shipping experience; that helps a LOT. V2 took six days just to hand my package over to FedEx, and that was maddening. (And that was shipping I was paying for!)

Thanks also for the data on the coils, which had been baffling. I'll keep track of my coil use so I'll know when to order so I don't run out. I really appreciate it!

You folks have been great; I'm gonna go relax now and get ready to save some money ($10/day). I live on a fixed income, so cigarettes have been an albatross around my neck, to say nothing about the effects on the rest of my body, obviously.

Thanks for everything, everyone!

welcome to the fold binkstress.

the whole vaping business can be very intimidating and scary initially.. but its really not that hard. it will always be harder than lighting up a smoke. but much more rewarding.

so as complicated as everything seems it can all be broken down very simply. there is always going to be a power source.. 99% of the time this is a battery. some batteries are fancier than others and have more capabilities/options, but basically the battery is there to provide power to the coil. the coil is the part that gets hot. within the coil there is a wick. the wick absorbs juice. when it gets hot.. it emits vapor and in that vapor is nicotine and often some yummy flavors and scents.

there are a variety of devices that hold the coil/wick and juice. they tend to offer a variety of differences to help match personal preferance... examples are how tight or loose the draw is... how big or small the area holding the juice is.. the type of coil they have.

what you have got is a great entry into the world of vaping. you might be lucky and be all set on this gear you've got... but if it doesn't completely float your boat, don't panic. there is a learning curve in this that is somewhat unavoidable, but can certainly be done for considerably less $ than the ciggs were costing you.

most go through an initial starter kit or two.. (two usually if the first is a cig-a-like (what we call e-cigs that look like cigarettes) bc most people are not satisfied w/ cig-a-likes)... and with that, have enough experience and knowledge of what they ultimately would be satisfied with.

juice can be a difficult search to find what you like. most of us started w/ some tobacco flavors that we didnt like nearly as much as we thought we would, and liked something fruity or desert like much more than we ever thought we would. i knew i was going to vape menthol tobacco juice bc i smoked menthols. turns out i really like fruit blends and creams and custards. im currently vaping some strawberries and cream... something i dont even really like in the real world but LOVE this stuff.

you may find that you are completely satisfied with the level of flavor and vapor production and throat hit and everything.. but if you arent.. ask around.. read a bit.. it quickly becomes far less daunting over time. this forum is a GREAT resource to learn from and an incredibly supportive community to help you on your way.

thank you for your service by the way. you will often see vendors that offer a discount for your service. definitely take advantage of that if you can.

Binky,

Well you know you could probably return the cartomizers since it looks like it won't work for you without the cartomizer tank (I never even realized there was such as thing). My guess is that you were looking for cartomizers that work like the cig-alikes? You would need the cartomizers that aren't pre-punched. Honestly, I think once you experience vaping with a tank, you wouldn't want to use cartomizers anyway. And the good thing is that your Protank 3 is a glass tank, so there won't be any worries about cracking if you are using certain juices like there are with plastic tanks.

If they haven't shipped yet (if you've just placed your order this morning), perhaps you can contact Mt Baker Vapor and see if they can change the order to the un-punched cartomizers.

Hi, folks:

I'm back with a quick update and some cheerleading for Mt Baker. jseah got me thinking, so with the help of Mariel at Mt Baker, I got my order straightened out. Lisa at Mt Baker canceled my order and credited my account, and Mariel explained that the cartomizers I'd ordered were redundant; they serve the same purpose as the tank (but are outdated technology) and I don't need them in addition to the tank. (TOTALLY hadn't understood that, so I was really grateful she didn't just let me order the cartomizers I didn't need!) So I took jseah's advice and went up to 24mg with my juice. I also took salemGold's advice and bought a second battery, and got some extra coils as well to save me the trouble in the future. I also spotted a case and grabbed that, because I tend to lose things, so that seemed like a no-brainer.

Mariel and Lisa at Mt Baker are BOSSES.

My order shipped today, and I expect to be happy in no time flat, at least until something goes wrong in shipping or my package is misdelivered, because that's the kinda luck I've been having lately.

Soon I'll be flinging around jargon like a pro while I vape and make faces at people when they tell me "You can't smoke in here."

That's great news Binky. It makes it easier since now you don't need to go through the hassle of returning what you don't need. So if your package makes it to the post office today, then you should be getting it on Wednesday...or by Thursday if it goes out tomorrow. If it turns out that the 24 mg is too much for you, you can always stop into any of the vape stores in NYC and buy a bottle of 6 mg or 12 mg juice and mix it with the 24 mg to lower the nic content. What flavor juice did you end up ordering? FYI, the free bottle of juice they will include with your order is 0 mg, so you could use that as well to cut it down. When I started vaping, I went with menthol since I was a menthol smoker. Now I am going towards the fruit flavors and have been mixing fruit flavored juice with my menthol juice.

jsea, thanks for the great news about lowering the nicotine content if I went overboard! That's cool! Because I read somewhere that tobacco favors are gonna disappoint me, I only got one (the 555) (I'm totally not into all the super-sweet, candy-flavored stuff), and also got Blood Orange and Green Apple. I'm nervous about those; I'm not sure how I feel about smoking fruits, either. If I'd had my druthers, I'd have gotten Grapefruit, but it wasn't an option. Smoking fruits seems weird. What I REALLY wanted was Bourbon, because THAT seems like something tasty to smoke. If I can't have a decent-tasting tobacco, then something else smoky seems as if it'd be a good replacement, you know? But holy hell, the flavor selection was daunting! I hope I manage to work my way up to mixing my own, because White Tea also sounded pleasant. I'm nervous about the fruity favors.

For my free bottle, I ordered some menthol, since I also read that menthol works nicely. Since I live in the hood, I'm broke, and because people frequently sell Newports on the street cheap, I do akshully smoke menthols now and then, so I'll be finding out how menthol is.

Hanna, you're waaay closer to Mt Baker than I am, so that's why you get your packages magically fast. :) I won't be quite that lucky!
