What do you do on New Years Day every year? For us it's Blackeyed peas and collards for good luck.

We are having black eyed peas. I cook them with a bell pepper and a jalapeño for the green. I use country style ribs in them too. They are good.
When I was a kid my mom used to cook a big pot of great northern beans with ham, corn bread and sliced onion on NYD. She said where she came from (Southern ILL) this was a tradition. Unfortunately... I couldn't stand the stuff. LOL

ive been slow cooking black eyed peas with bacon in it, all morning long, like to slow cook them all day..
have collard greens cooking to, making cornbread and frying porkchops, mo yummers!

Beckah your suppose to eat blackeyed peas for luck. I had my bowl this morning and won't eat them again until next year. Now pizza sounds good for supper.
we never really celebrated new years day, just eve in my family. I missed NYE with my family the past couple years, but it's usually a concoction of fried fish (different types from bull head, to haddock, to pike... depending on what's been caught or bought). My Italian grandmother (Nonnie as we call her), usually makes a clam sauce for pasta and it's so delicious. mmmmm fish and clam sauce..... I wish I could have been with family for NYE would have been delicious, and probably wouldn't be stuck with this headache from my alcohol dinner last night.
We had black eyed peas and cabbage. Does anybody know the story behind eating these two things on New Years Day. My son-in-law just told me while I was cooking.

Some people put a dime in the pot of black-eyed peas; whoever is served the dime is guaranteed prosperity for the coming year. That's of course if they don't swallow the dime and spend their savings on medical care.
