Why am burning through coils, no matter the brand?

Ok, answer me this, why am I constantly going through coils??? I have an 2 itaste VV and I have them set at the lowest wattage which is 6.0 and then if I do use the voltage I still only use it 3.3. I have Kanger minis, protanks 3 areotanks, aspire nautilus mini, no matter what I am going through them. I use Omega juice, Cyclops juice, Obsession, Vista Vapors, and a local vape shops fluid. So I think I am using good juice. Do I need to use a higher ohm? I mean I use 1.5. I think. Yes I'm still trying to figure this out. lol Any help would be great!

A lot of us think this is wasteful (and expensive) and prolong the life of our coils by "dry burning" them, and also by "rebuilding" them. Before I get into a lot of detail, when you say you're constantly going through coils, how often does that happen? And, what happens to the coils, exactly? Do they stop working, or do they just start tasting bad (burnt? Loss of flavor? Something else?)

They just start tasting burnt and yucky. I mean almost instantly. Flavor changes, then yucky burn taste. Can even smell it. I try to let my coils soak whenever I put in a new one. I dry hit them also to try to get more juice in the wick. Am I vaping to much in a row??? Arghhh! As for building my own...are ya crazy??? lol I can't figure this out , I assure I won't be able to do that lol I just want to get this part figured out. Any help be great!!!!!

That is perplexing. Sounds like you are doing everything I'd suggest. Prime the coil, let it soak, dry hits to get some juice to the coil. This is happening with 2 separate batteries? The power you are vaping at is well below anything I'd expect to burn.

Have you asked at your local shop for any help troubleshooting?

And yes 2 different batteries. I'm not in this for the big vape cloud, I in it to quit smoking , so am getting ticked that my stuff not working right lol All i want is great throat hit, and my urges calmed lol I've up my nicotine up to 18mg. hoping that would help. Buying expensive juice, try it in shop, tastes great , get home in my tanks...tastes like crap. arghhhh lol

Hi Granny,

There are basically three reasons why your juice can taste burned. Some juices don't take heat as well as others, but you've tried a lot of different juices, so we can scratch that off the list. Next cause is that juice isn't wicking to the coil fast enough. Since you're using pre-made coils and using different juices, and since you're vaping at low wattage, that shouldn't be a problem either. The third reason is you're not getting enough airflow across the coil. That's the one I'd think about. How hard are you drawing when you breathe in? Do you breath in from the mouth, or from the lungs? Does the draw seem airy, or really tight? Your aerotanks and nautilus should have adjustable air flow, try opening that all the way and try giving a heavier drag to move more air past the coil. See if that makes any difference.

Also, if you've already burnt the juice or coil, the rest of the juice you put in there will may taste burnt until you clean the tank thoroughly, and dry-burned or replaced the coil as well. So, that's something to keep in mind.

Hmm, that sounds familiar. I was at a shop that I visited once before and the last time I was there I bought two bottles of Space Jam "Pluto", in the store I thought it tasted great, sort of like cantaloupe and bubblegum but when I got home and put it into a clean tank with a brand new coil, the flavor was purely cantaloupe and floral. The following week I stopped in at the store and asked them about the sample juices on their display and what nicotine level they were. They told me they were all either 0mg or 6mg (at the most) and I vape at 18mg.

I asked in the juice forum if nicotine can change the flavor and people said that it would, and that most B&M stores have either 0mg samples or very low nicotine samples and that is likely why the flavor is sometimes nasty to me when I get it home and into my own equipment, due to the 18mg of nicotine that I want for my juices.

So, that leaves me wondering if you are experiencing the same situation.

The only flavor that I've found, (and only found it yesterday) that didn't change between the sample at the store and when put into my clean tank with new coil is something called "Hot Cin", which is like a cinnamon hot candy. The cinnamon flavor takes me just to the very edge of feeling like cinnamon burn in my mouth but never actually crosses that line. In any event, even at 18mg I don't notice the normal yucky flavor change that I get with almost every other flavor e-liquid that I've bought. My guess is that the cinnamon is so strong that it masks any flavor that the 18mg of nicotine might impart to it.

And as somebody else mentioned, you may simply be vaping faster than the wick can wick up the e-liquid. I have had that but usually with 're-used" coils that I've cleaned in the past with either a denture cleanser or vodka bath. Usually when I'm stuck with one of them I just try to slow down my vaping to try to let as much liquid get into the coil head as possible between vapes. Sometimes I have to slow down so much that I'll get on my cell phone and google for the closest vape shop to go buy a new coil instead of vaping so slow.

I was thinking about it and I noodled it through to the same conclusion are you getting enough air to the coils?

Not recoil, but rewick. It's how I got started and it made a big difference in taste. Haven't tried the Nautilus coils yet, but just rewicking the just bought ProTank coils was easy to do. After several weeks, I got the nerve up to try to recoil. So happy that I learned to do that and it wasn't as hard as I thought.

I started with organic cotton balls then cellu cotton (100% rayon) then hemp. Prefer the cellu cotton bought at Sally's Beauty Supply.

Yes, just rewicking; I got 2 packs of 5 coils each still untouched, meanwhile what I vape on is about 10+ coil heads, which I mostly rewick or occassionally recoil.


If I had only one coil head, it would go like this:

rewick - once a day
dryburn - once a week
recoil - once a month

Considering you seem to be using protank and aerotank stuff can I assume your using kanger duel coils? I had my first one last me only 3 days. On the 2nd day I cleaned out my tank and for the duel coils I dry burned it, rinsed it with water. then dry burned again. Those you can't really get apart because of their design. It crapped out on me the next day. The one I got in now I only wipe down with a paper towel. I don't repeat what I did before. I think it has now been officially 14 days and it is still going fine. A vape at 8 watts usually. For a few things I found I need to go higher for it to taste good. Highest I have gone is 10 watts. Which is usually fine to do on a duel coil. At least from what I have read up on them. Are you perhaps vaping at too low a temp? Also what is the resistance of your coils? Are they 2 ohms like mine? I'd consider trying every option available on this. I am new to vaping myself but this sounds really odd to me. Just try bumping it up some and see if perhaps that helps. Also like some said try checking the airflow. I got an aerotank mini. One thing I got to keep an eye on when I refill my tank is that I haven't accidentally closed the valve. which I have done before. Having that closed can interfere from getting a hit and could possible burn the juice. BTW I also have an itaste vv. lol.

This is assuming they are using a single coil. With kanger's duel coils it is kinda hard to get them apart.

I hate to say this but I think it might really be worth a try to move to re building. I know you say you do not want/ or are not interested in trying to rebuild but it is really a game changer. I would be willing to ship to you ( granny and granny only) a Igo w... with a brand new coil and organic japanese cotton free of charge if you think you would like to try it. It is a dripper and would fit on you device might not look like all that but it performs well and the build would certainly last you a bit. I would send some extra cotton so if you are careful you could re wick at least twice.

Harsh truth of the day: it's far less hassle in the long run to rebuild than it is to fuss and fiddle with crappy stock coils. I'm an idiot but I taught myself to build a functional coil in about 20 minutes.

Silly question, but what is your pg/vg ratio? Since you say you want throat hit and it sounds like you may be having issues with the liquid wicking fast enough, more pg may help.

I was thinking sort of along these lines, but maybe try diluting with water or a tiny bit of alcohol (PGA or vodka). [I'm thinking just a small experiment of taking 3 ml of juice into a different bottle and adding a few drops of either water or alcohol and seeing if it wick better, not modifying an entire bottle right off the bat.]

It seems weird that it would be air flow, since it's doing this will all her clearos.

Did we get info on whether it's single coils or dual?

With a freshly cleaned topper, new coil, put it on your VV3 and check the resistance. (Press both up and down buttons at the same time.) If the reading isn't real close to what's expected (marked on the coil base, measured with some other meter), then you might be getting a poor connection between the VV3 and the topper.

The VV3 is known to have a slightly taller than normal ego threaded portion, and for many doesn't make a solid connection to all toppers. (And a soft grommet under the pin, easy to inadvertently push down for the same problem.) If that's the case, the electronics can see a varying resistance, and then the regulation goes crazy, often resulting in the burning you have.
