Why are mornings so harsh?

So, 5th day of vaping, averaging about 0.5 – 1.5 analogs a day – go me! My biggest problem is when I wake up. Like many smokers, as I roll over to turn the alarm off, I’m also reaching for my morning dose of nicotine. My problem is that vaping really, really hurts in the morning. It feels like my chest is going to explode and I start coughing and having a hard time breathing.. did I mention it’s really painful?! I’ve tried 18mg menthol, I’ve tried 8mg waffle. Today I lightly vaped for a good hour before I finally gave up and ‘primed’ my lungs with an analog. After that I was able to vape with relatively no problems.

Will this get better? Is this part of the process, something I need to get used to?

I really hope this is something that will fade. If it weren’t for the mornings, my cancer sticks would average 0-0.5 a day instead.

If you are only a 5 day analog free smoker could be just from the left over residual crap in your lungs from smoking and the humidity from the digital(vapor being water) is causing things to loosen up and lungs expelling it.I notice that with carts it is a little harsh in the morning,it seems to help to not just let them sit open all night, put plugs on them at night and drop a drip on atty then uncap and put cart on first thing in morning.,it seems to help.I don't notice any harshness with cartomizers first thing in the morning like I have with carts.

Everything gets better with vaping. Like someone mentioned, you could be sensitive to PG. I can't take too much of it. Otherwise, I get a sore throat, the vaping seems harsh, and I cough a lot. Also, my mouth and throat feel as dry as Death Valley. Also, be aware that PG and VG will dehydrate you. Remember to drink plenty of water. Also, the coughing could be part of your lungs clearing themselves out from the trash that you were putting in them before.

And, yes, go you for cutting down as much as you have!!:thumb:

Congrats you are making good progress. If your coughing lasts more than a few minutes or other than just a hit of vapor you should see a doctor.

I'm also new and learned the harshness of taking a vape hit varies on many factors, levels of PG/VG, nic level, delivery method. I find in the morning dripping is much better than a cartomizer. I find cartomizers deliver the harshest or most "hit". Some like this, some don't. Also, if you fill your own, cartomizers and cartridges should be washed and dried prior to use if you are sensitive. There are lots of forum and you tube entries on washing them and drying them. New attys are also horrible when brand new. Not sure if any of this will help. Hope so, and good luck to you.

I was typing up a nice long response and then it hit me. I'm having minor asthma attacks. Haven't had one in 16 or so years, so I didn't really recognize it. It's odd though that PG or VG (whichever is doing it) is effecting me like that but I'm basically immune (asthmatically speaking) to massive amounts of chemicals in analogs. I guess I will be refilling that Rx and trying different blends of VG/PG!

Oh, I didn't mention, but I am drinking LOTS of water! I drink about 2 pots of coffee a day and between 2-3 liters of pure water. So I have fluids covered, I think!

And the PG/VG of my current blends are almost unknown. One of my mints is a PG base but the others are whatever V4L uses. It wasn't listed on their site (that I noticed). I have another order incoming in the next couple days that are pure VG, so if it is PG related, I should know then.

Hi Chloe and welcome to ECF!

It's probably nothing more than vaping is not smoking... I've been vaping for a while now and I still have that harsh feeling in the mornings, and sometimes after eating. I think it is just the way it is. BUT, it does get better and the coughing will lessen (then stop altogether). Like others have said, be sure to drink plenty of water. Also, it helps to work up to it...little puffs, lightly inhale, etc., until the harshness is gone. And don't worry about a tobacco cig or two...it took me 7 months to go completely to vaping.

Good luck!

Chloe,

I had similiar issues, but it was all PG related. I would cough all day long, I thought it was a cold. However, once I switched to all VG everything cleared up. I am still dealing with Wood Stove allergies, but I cough less now than I have in 15 years. :) Good luck to you! I hope you find what works for you with your Asthma. I think V4L is a 50/50 mix, can't remember where I read that though.

Good Luck again, vaping is awesome!

I couldn't vape easily in the mornings at first. A couple different things happened for me. First, I just kept up with the morning and evening cigarette, and was happy only having 2 a day versus 15 a day. Second, my routine changed. I got up and showered first instead of coffee and a cigarette. Then, I would grab the electronic pv instead, just to give it a try, which eventually became more favorable and the cigarettes just disappeared. I haven't had a cigarette in 2 months, but I've been vaping for 3. It took me a month. Don't rush it too much. Good luck, and enjoy your journey. :)

I remember experiencing that early on. It was as if my just-awoken lungs just didn't want to welcome the vapor. From reading here, I thought it might be a PG thing and got some VG juices. But not long after, I switched away from VG for a bunch of reasons and found I no longer had that early morning issue. So all along I think it was just some sort of acclimating problem, and now it's a distant memory.

In her blog (Vapor Muse) , missnomad theorizes that it can be attributed to damaged cilia. When you smoke cigarettes, you paralyze the cilia in your respiratory system. The cilia are suppose to trap things (like moisture) to prevent them from entering your lungs. She mentions, as a smoker, yawning in the shower causes her to cough. When you use your ecig you are inhaling water vapor. Since you cilia haven't recovered yet, you can initially feel discomfort. This should subside after a while.

Now, I have no idea if this is accurate but it sounds reasonable.

On another note, I encourage anyone who hasn't seen her blog yet, check it out. Also check out her youtube channel: YouTube - MissNomad89's Channel. Very informative and fun to read/watch.

I got up and showered first instead of coffee and a cigarette.

I could probably get used to showering before smoking.. but showering before coffee?! That sounds simply dreadful! How do you function and remember all of your 2000 parts?!:p

On a more serious note, thanks for your input! I have no intentions of giving up on this. I realize it's an adjustment and will take time.

Actually, I get up, zombie myself into the kitchen and grab the coffee, sip it on my way back to the bedroom, lay out my clothes while I'm drinking, then get into the shower, and proceed from there. Besides, coffee cups can go into the shower. Plus, if you haven't seen it . . .

EDIT:   I can't help but laugh EVERY SINGLE TIME I watch that thing!
