Why do all vape shops look so nondescript?

is it just coincidence or is there a reason why all vape shops ive seen look like they're hiding something? the windows are usually painted or have blinds and some of then dont have signs that are easy to see... reason i'm asking is because a friend of mine is thinking of opening one up in the los angeles area and he asked me.

You know I've noticed that some as well, and I liken to the days that these were "headshops" selling pipes at one time or are from that same era. Now around here two of the well known shops are the polar opposite, bright, all glass windows with lights everywhere showcasing it and another is setup more like a vape bar with an apothecary feel..both very nice.

The big B&M near me--Vape Dojo--has storefront that looks more like a nail salon or jeweler than a "head shop". The entire front of the shop is clear glass windows, it has comfy couches, and products are diplayed on very neat shelves you can clearly see from the sidewalk...

Maybe it's because the vape shops in your area can only afford real estate in "dicey" neighborhoods, and they don't want to tempt the criminal element with shop full of easy-to-see, VERY expensive gear.

Where are you located?

It's an awesome shop, always lots of people and a great atmosphere .. They have couches you can sit on and just chill, chat, and try new juices

And the staff is super nice and well informed

I'll be going up there tomorrow :) as I do just about every Saturday

I second this. Im in there at least once a week and it is very open, clean and bright. The staff is great and very engaging. Im heading down tomorrow as well :)

Some neighborhoods have business commerce groups that pretty much have say in what kind of business can come into the neighbood. Some of these groups are wary to not have certain businesses that can have a negative or sleezy quality to them. For example, a tattoo parlor or body piercing shop, head shop, porn shop, etc.

These business groups may look upon an e-cig shop as a head shop. Yes, I know that's completely ignorant. But they look at the big tube mods with the glass tanks and believe they are looking at paraphanalia. I know this for a fact. "No sir, it is not a water pipe. It is an electronic cigarette."

If an e-cig vendor is lucky enough to be granted admission into one of these neighborhoods, it may be under stipulations that certain products can not be openly displayed in the storefront. Or the vendor chooses to do so on their own to deter any possible flack from the anti-ecig groups.

So, alot probably depends upon the neighborhood and what the local climate is towards e-cigs.

Well if they allow vaping inside or have a lounge and the area you live in have mostly non-smokers around they probably don't want the non-smokers / vapers to call the cops for smoking inside a building. (Yes I know its vaping, but most people cannot tell the difference) especially when the vapor in the store looks like smoke....

Both the B&M's I go to are very open. The one in the mall showcases stuff right at the front that is clearly visible to people walking by with a big open entrance and you can see inside as you pass. Shoot the one has a huge green neon sign with "e-cigs" in its name lol.

It is understandable with some that appear to be hiding something but like someone mentioned, this stuff does look a little "different".

We don't have one...yet. I checked the yellow pages and called everybody I thought might have something. The "Head shop" said they should have stuff in from 2 or 3 suppliers in about 3 weeks. I didn't even know there was a head shop in town anymore and it's in one of the nicer busy strip malls. Nobody else was even interested in carrying vape gear. Can't wait for them to get their stuff in. I'm excited!
