Why do dry atties taste so bad?

I've been trying to figure this out.

All the atomizer does is provide a heat source to vaporize the liquid. Nothing is burning.

But then why does that horrible dry atty taste happen when it runs out of juice. It burns my throat and tastes bad enough to make me gag. Shouldn't it be just heated air you're inhaling at that point? What is causing the terrible taste?

Anyone have any idea?

The bad taste is most likely coming from the polyfill fiber or foam material that soaks up the liquid in the cartridge and wicks it to the atty. It has become too dry. When that happens, you get that horrible "plasticky" taste so many have spoken of. You have to keep your cartridges topped off. Don't let them get down to below 1/3 of their capacity -- always top off as frequently as you can. If you are using disposable cartomizers, then replace them more often.

I don't really use carts anymore. I usually drip and use cartomizers.

I get the nasty taste even when dripping on my atty with the bridge and wick removed, so there's nothing around the coil to burn once the liquid is gone and, since I'm not using any carts, no polyfill.

There has to be something else on or around the atty that makes it taste so bad.
