Why does my dual coil tank continue to flood and can one fix it?

Hello. I've been vaping for something like half a year. I've lurked these forums since then, and recently made an account to post. I've been having some trouble with my dual coil tank lately and thought ECF might be able to help me out.

The device I'm having problems on is a 5v box mod from madvapes. The box functions perfectly. It's the dual coil tank I have on the box that preforms badly.

It is a 5ml dual coil tank from madvapes. The cartomizer inside it is a dual hole, 2.5 ohm replacement also from madvapes. The liquid inside the tank is a 80% vg / 20% pg mix also from madvapes, the flavor of which is sticky toffee pudding.

I installed the replacement cartomizer in the tank as soon as I got it. I filled the tank about halfway and primed the cartomizer with maybe 10 drops of liquid, first 5 or so and then waiting a few minutes, then another 5. It did not flood for quite a few hits, until the liquid started getting really wicked. I experienced the flooding about 20 minutes after adding the liquid. I took off the tank and let it sit for a little bit, pressing it against nearby surfaces to see if liquid was still dripping out the bottom.

It dripped on and off for about a day. I popped it back on my 5v box mod when it seemed to stay dry for a while and was able to take maybe 3-4 hits before it would start bubbling and the draw was hard, which told me it was flooding again. I unscrewed it and let it sit on tissue or whatever was laying around to absorb the drips. This went on for about 3 days in all, until there was no liquid left in the tank but still some in the cartomizer.

My first thought was that maybe the first time I filled it, I somehow squirted quite a bit of liquid into the center hole. So when it seemed to be done flooding by the end of the 3 days, I filled it up about a quarter of the way. It began flooding again, which leads me to believe I did not squirt any down the center hole.

My only other guess is that it is either the dual holes in the cartomizer or the liquid itself. But dual hole cartos are the only ones I use and I've not had a problem with flooding with them before, and it has all been with madvapes liquid.

I'm not sure what the problem could be, but thought a veteran might be able to help me or pose some sort of remedy. Any advice would be appreciated, because the flavor is super delicious I would also like to note that I don't blame madvapes for this and they're still my favorite vendor to date.

I use DCTs, have for several months, and what you're describing was one of the harder things to learn in regards to them. Now I can't say that this is always the case, but I've had it happen several times.

When I would fill mine, I would fill the carto first, dripping into the tip and then giving it the thermometer shake unti it wouldn't accept anymore liquid. Then I would blow it out into a tissue, clean off the threads and pop it onto a mod and make sure it worked. There will be a bit of liquid dripping from the holes in the side, that's normal, just wipe them off. There is a chance of getting a dead one, so I'd rather not have to remove a dead one from a full tank...that's not as much fun as it sounds, even if you have a syringe.

Once I was certain that it worked, I would install the carto in the tank, fill the tank up and pop it onto my mod. I preferred the 3-hole ones, and single coil.

When one of my cartos would flood, I pretty much presumed that it was the end of it and tossed it. What I learned from that was that the reason mine were flooding was because I was drawing too hard. The DCT is essentially a vacuum system. The pressure that you're exerting on it through suction, causes the liquid to enter the carto, be pulled toward the wick, and then be vaporized. If you pull too hard, you can quickly overwhelm the wick and...flood.

Now I know what you're thinking. Isn't the suction going out the bottom hole too? Yep. That's sort of the mitigation, so that you can draw a little on it. If the bottom vent wasn't there, you'd just be breathing liquid. It's not designed to take a hard draw though, if it was, it would be far too airy and nobody would like it.

So, next time you load up your carto and get it ready to go in the tank, make sure that you're taking gentle drags on it, and avoid primer puffs unless you start getting a bad/flavorless vape.

Cheers!
