wick burning question

Why a wick when you torch it, it stays as it is, but when you put a coil around it and fire it becomes black without any liquid yet. I am asking because some people claim when dry burning it becomes white again. How is this possible?

it really gets white aal. But maybe your new wire need some cleaning first or you have to burn it before you put in around your wick
