Wicks and torching

I am assuming you mean the coil and not the wick (although you can torch silica, but not cotton or rayon)

A lighter works fine, so will a candle, gas stove - anything with a naked flame.

To be honest, I've pretty much stopped torching my kanthal unless I am using something like a 32ga (to remove the springiness). I always pulse them on the device after building to remove any oils from manufacturing anyway.
 
Oh I shouldve clarified... I meant Silica wick, or Ekowool the braided one. I've heard there are tiny fibers and maybe even chemicals or other things that should be burnt off, but someone said not to use a Bic lighter, and I was wondering why. But I wasn't going to torch my kanthal, would just pulse like you said you do.
