Yea, I don’t want to torch for oxidation... just to get out any oils. I guess it would make more since to boil it and wash with soap. It looks like my rope doesn’t have the polymer in the middle, so I’m good in that area. The Nextel I heard to torch for various reasons. I guess the main is to help it from unraveling, which apparently is a big issue with it. Haven’t tried it yet, so I hope it goes easy.

Were can I get the 411 on the stem-wick approach your talking about?

it's in this thread a couple of pages back

after running the stem-wick now for almost a week, I noticed another benefit of this design, I get zero back flow from the wick, so my juice doesn't darken towards the end of my tank. I have been vaping DIY watermelon, which is clear, and when i get to the end of the tank in the aga it is still just as clear as when it was full.

I suppose it's time I revisit ss rope wicks. Cooking my juice is the reason I stopped using them. I'd like to find a balance between performance and longevity. I'll be trying out a stem wick with a bit of xc-132 at the top this weekend :)

I just got some wire rope today, 2mm 7x19 and using in a did clone and aga-s, it taste's terrible, like metal and the chambers get pretty hot.

I set it up in the following order:
1. cut to size (clean cuts)
2. flamed several times, each time burning it red hot.
3. oxidised a piece of mesh large enough to cover where the coils were going to sit and rolled it onto the rope.
4. wrapped some 0.4 x 0.1 kanthal ribbon round it (giving me 1.1-1.2 ohms)
5. got any hot spots out and vaped all day.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for any input

I've only used 2mm 7x7 SS rope and I wrap 500 mesh around coil end. I cut the piece of mesh so it goes down into the decking but not into juice well. IDW if that changes anything but thats what I do and I'm getting the best flavor and vapor in 2yrs of vaping. I tried both ekowool and XS-sleeving and found the flavor muted compared to the mesh. .....Anyone have a ft. or two of 1/16 SS rope. please pm

I didn't put the mesh into the wick hole, just rested it on top, is anyone else using 7x19? did I over oxidise the wick? the taste reminds me of when I first started vaping mesh and didn't flame the kanthal (I flamed it in this instance).

I am having the same issue and getting that nasty metal taste even though I have a well wound coil and no hotspots, can't work out why its tasting like that.

I boiled it twice and torched it red hot twice?

Maybe you're not getting it hot enough. I am torching mine with a MAP gas torch to almost white hot. I have not had to boil mine and I am not getting a metallic taste with a sub-ohm 28 ga coil.

Battery life is pretty bad, but the vape and flavor are phenomenal and I don't mind keeping a spare battery or 2 with me to go throughout the day. I eats juice like a hungry hog too, but again, it's worth it to me for the smooth and flavorful vape I am getting.

Humm, I still got virgin rope I’m gonna get down with this weekend. I'm not sure if I should boil, soap wash, and repeat... or torch it red hot. I was leaning towards just doing the wash and boil because I was afraid that torching it would give off a bad taste in the long run. Not quite sure what’s the best rout now.

Mine isn't or shouldn't be galvanised i got it from the vape mesh company. Pretty reliable guys, here is the link:

http://www.vape-atomizer-mesh.com/p...--7-x-19-Wrie-Cable-Rope---1-Metre--2421.html

I burnt mine red hot over a gas hob but not white hot, I've gotta put the stuff in my rsst so will try just the boil method first, then try boiling and white hot, anyone using 7x19? is it better than 7x7 or worse?

cheers

im running mesh over wire. with my mesh down the wick hole. because wire is 2mm and hole is 1/8". Only time i get metal taste is right after I dry burn it. or if I have a hot spot. I also have a rolled up mesh in my fill hole. You sure your getting enough juice to the wick ? its not too tight in the hole is it ? Im jsut guessing here, trying to help ya out. Im really loving this wire. havent changed wick in almost a month. just pull it out and dry burn every once in awhile. Maybe clean off the mesh a bit if its real gunky.

I just burn mine over the gas stove till its red a couple time. I have it an agat2 and an old aga steel tank.

okay here are some pics of what i described earlier
View attachment 215876
This is the wick cut, it it the height of the wick hole in the aga

View attachment 215870
This is it disassembled to remove the string (mcmaster carr stuff has a string in the middle)

View attachment 215871
this is wick, re-assembled, with the center core pulled out to one side aprox .32"

View attachment 215873

And this is the finished wick, with cotton wrapped around the .32" center core. The cotton is from a towel i found at walmart
100% Cotton flour sack cloth. I just cut a small strip, and wrapped it like you would a SS mesh.

I wonder if cheesecloth would work with this, my wife would get irritated if I started cutting the towels up. i can picture it now, "honey why is a corner of this towel gone?"
"uhhhh the dog ate it?"

I sawa guy at a local shop running it like this... said it works great. I don't know if I should do mesh or ekwool or nextel. I got all the above, this weekend is my time to try everything out. Wasn't sure what rout to go so I picked up a little of everything I heard about being used with rope setups.

I have also experimented with cheese cloth, it works, but is more difficult to keep the tip from being a frayed mess. I have another one wrapped with cotton ball, as i have heard alot from the different cotons for wick thread this is prefered by most. I did experiment with cotton balls when i was running a %100 percent cotton U-wick, but the cotton ball method was to labor intensive to make a decent u-wick. It wasn't anymore dificult with the stem-wick, if anything it was easier than the cheese cloth or the towel. Haven't vaped it yet though, I just got an AGI and have been playing around with it the last couple of days and didn't feel like cutting more rope for it, as the overall wick height in the AGI needs to be shorter.

it works great with cheese cloth, kind of a pain to set up though. Ill go through a tank and update

Makes me wonder, why not just go full cotton? I mean, you're using the rope to wick juice to the cotton right? Only reason would be that rope wicks better than cotton. Does it?

Thanks!
