Sounds like it could be too much wax got applied. When applying it should look wet but not pasty, especially in corners or on edges. Excesses should be wiped off before it cures.

To fix a piece, going over the finish with a small piece of clean 600 grit paper and buffing again ought to get rid of the tackiness.

I've seen some videos of people hitting it with a hair dryer to melt it into the wood. The stuff you use us it store bought or did you make it?

Store bought. Hardware store in the furniture section. I've got Starwax, but I think Minwax is a close match. It's beeswax and less than 21% turpentine and 1% pine oil. It comes in a natural color, which looks like an off white paste. I doubt I'd want to try to make my own.

The hair dryer technique sounds interesting but not so much for paste, it is quite creamy and gets into nooks and crannies quite well.

Okay so I just got back from home depot with some linseed oil and some minwax polish. Just a question or two. Do you cote the inside of your mods as well? How dark does the linseed make lite wood and what sort of shine can I expect from this. Im guessing nothing like a poly. Does the linseed help the grain to stand out like a poly wood. I have some nice wood that doesn't look like much till you sand it and hit it with something like poly. Then its like wow!

Olive oil can go ransid, so not good for food items or mods. I'm not actually sure what salad bowls and the such have on them.

I do put finish on as much as possible, inside too, but in some cases there is already a brass tube in the atty hole, so I've missed that area a few times. When the oil is applied and looks wet, the grain does pop, slightly duller when dry, but improves again after sanding and again after waxing and buffing. Poly is probably shinier, but is a different beast.

There is some darkening, but most noticeable with a lighter wood. Darker browns and reds don't show much change, especially as the grain is brought out. Ash and curly maple show more. Here is a pic of two mods from the same stock, on the left it is about 2 or 3 years old (been vaping this morning, so excuse the crust on the mouthpiece) and on the right it is just about ready to have the wood finished but bare for now.

Nice look Mods.

Have you Poked around e-Bay and seen the Exotic Wood that are Available?

I did for awhile some Custom Knife Scales. For Small pieces like what it would take to make a Box Mod, you can pick up some Nice Pieces that Won't cost you a fortune.

There are some nice woods on ebay. never would have thought.

Yes... Yes there is.

Also, If you find a Seller you like and who has Reasonable Prices, don't hesitate to contact them asking for a Specific Size Blank.

Just about all of them are Cutting Down Larger Pieces to what they Think a Person might want. No reason they can't cut a Blank to the Size that You Want.

I got into Spalted Woods for awhile...
