Hi! After having frequent issues with my aspire nautilus 2 tank (leaking, gurgling, short coil life, general futzing and annoyance), I started looking into a different tank to use with my zelos, but complaints similar to mine seem common with other coils.

Someone recommended an RDA to me but I don't want to drip. But in researching these I came across the Wotofo Troll RTA. I've watched some videos but I am still full of questions, probably dumb ones so please forgive my utter ignorance with this stuff.

(It doesn't have to be the Troll RTA, but people seem to like that one, but I am fully open to other suggestions that are more new-user-friendly. Maybe a Kanger mini would be more versatile?)

Anyway, here goes!

1 - Can I use the troll on my aspire zelos? I like the size, battery life, and vape at a very low wattage, so I am very happy with the zelos, but I don't know if the troll will even couple with the zelos.

2 - In terms of actual coil performance, does an RTA outperform a regular replacement (disposable) coil? My issues have been that after about 2 days, the air flow and flavour drop off considerably. I'm sick of buying new ones but I'm also sick of futzing with it every 3 days, and I don't think I'd enjoy futzing with an RTA just as often even if I'm saving money.

2a - I vape Salt Nix juice which gunks up my coils very fast. Can the Troll use this liquid? I've tried many and this is the only kind I really like. They recommend 1.8 ohms and ~10W for this liquid.

3 - As a noob, will I be able to figure this out? Is this a leap of faith deal? The videos I've watched seem straightforward enough, but on a more technical level (number of wraps, gauge, inner diameter) there's a lot I don't really "get" and I assume I won't until I actually do it. The warnings are a little scary, and I don't have electric knowledge, although my boyfriend has some limited knowledge (i.e., rewiring a lamp) we're certainly not experts.

4 - Once I get past the learning curve, will this be a less issue-prone vaping experience? I'm talking about leaks, gurgling, faulty coils, and so on.

I can use the nautilus 2 as a backup as I learn an RTA, but I have this faraway dream of my vape just working, not having to be prepared for a big leak every time I refill the tank, and I'm really hoping an RTA is my path.

I don't mind doing extra work (i.e., making the new coils and wick) so long as it works, and I don't care much about vapour. I just want good flavour, good airflow (DL as much as possible), minimal issues, and a coil that lasts longer than 3 days.

Thanks in advance for your help :)

1 yes and no 50w for a dual coil is not enough i think check a dual 18650 mod
2 you can use whatever liquid you like
3 sure you can always post here if you have problems
4 yes most rtas nowadays are great and leak free
There loads of good tanks lately just check the first page here i.e. Reload rta wotofo smm amit 25 kylyn obs engine etc :)

Have in mind that the troll is more of a direct lung vape and not a mouth to lung vape also messing around with rtas is more like a hobby i.e. Building wicking etc etc but very rewarding in the end

I am smitten with my Engine Nanos & having an affair with Serpent SMM. Both are single coil and can be built to vape at well under 50w. For beginner I would recommend SMM. Easier build deck and easier to wick. If using sweet high vg juices you will rewick every 2-4 days. Coils can last for several weeks and up to 2 months. Wicking material cotton or rayon, good argument for both

Thanks mang. Couple follow-ups for ya if you don't mind...

Would a single coil work with a 50W? I don't mind getting a different mod but since I vape at 10W and the battery lasts forever I don't see any need to.

I definitely do want DTL. I don't mind is being hobby-esque, I don't want to work my life around it but I do tend to enjoy little projects like that if they are easy enough that I don't get annoyed.

Okay thank I'll check out that SMM!

My juice is pale and 50/50 but for some reason it gunks up my coils like crazy. The shop guy said it was because the juice has such strong nicotine that they have to increase flavour... although it doesn't seem overly sweet to me.

So when you rewick that means you just replace the cotton? And the little coil spiral lasts longer than the cotton? Okay, in my head I thought you had to rebuild the coil every time you changed the wick. I don't think I'd mind changing the wick every 2-3 days or even daily.

At 4$ per pre-made coil, replacement them every 3 days burns. But that cotton wick stuff is cheap.

I was also looking at the Kanger mini RTA - is there a consensus on whether that is decent or not? I like that it also pre-made coils to use in a pinch. But I have read mixed reviews.

I don't know anything about Kanger rta. Spiral thing is coil, fluffy stuff is wick. Lot of good options for prebuilt coils. Good idea to use those at first. Using 50vg juice you will refill tank quite often. Might want try 70vg.

Thanks, yeah, I have wanted to test out other coils but afaik the nautilus 2 is only compatible with nautilus coils and I don't want to buy a bunch of tanks just to find it's an inevitable juice issue, ya know?

Salt nix only comes in 50/50 (and woefully, only in four flavours) but it's the only juice that gives me that instant nicotine head rush. The upside of it is that you use less juice because of it - one hit will satisfy me whereas anything else, I have to suck on the thing for several minutes to feel sated.

But yeah I'm starting to feel more confident about this RTA business! If I never see a stupid nautilus coil staring at me blankly as I run for papertowels to sop up the leaking juice, I'll be a happy girl.

Are you using clones in nautilus? That is all my uncle uses and has no leaking issues. Only uses authentic coils. Or you may just need a new gasket.

Authentic coils, yeah. I mean, it's not terrible, I don't want to seem overly dramatic about it - it works well most of the time and when it does work, I'm happy with it. But when it doesn't work, it's really frustrating (and I've had several issues so far on both my and my boyfriend's units). And I still have the issue of the coils lasting 3 days at $4 each, which, by the time I add in juice used, juice lost to leaks, coils thrown away because they just won't stay screwed in, is almost as much as I spent when I was smoking. There's got to be a better way.

Usually dual coils and clapton coils and all that jazz require 40 watts and up that means that you need a dual battery mod to have that power and decent battery life. If the juice is havy on the coils then i think evry 2 to 3 days you have to rewic as @Letitia said your coils will last maybe months

keep in mind that although you can use any 510 tank on the Zelos (which is every tank out there) that the Zelos is only 23mm wide...so bigger tanks will look kind of silly on there with so called "overhang" where the tank protrudes over the edge of the mod.
Some don't care, but some hate it....just something to be aware off.

I am late to the party, and I'll admit I did not read all of the posts in the thread, but...

The majority of the RTAs I saw people listing are good, but not really on the Zelos, and not really as a first RTA, and not as a successor to the Nautilus. That's a lot of nots, ain't it?

I would recommend something like the Kanger Toptank Mini with the RBA deck, or the Smok Spirals... also with an RBA deck. The benefit to learning on tanks such as these is the ability to fall back on premade coil heads. Using a dedicated RTA means that if you're struggling, or the coil goes bad while you're out and about, you're sunk until you have the time to build another coil. Both of the tanks suggested are simple, single coil units with airflow that can be cut down to more closely match what you're used to.

If you REALLY want an RTA, consider a Kayfun. Again, simple single coil with a more restricted airflow...

Ok here's my 1.5 cents. How about a tank with pop in coils and an optional pop in coil that is designed specifically to be rewickable and or rebuildable? These coils are cheaper than your current coils @ 7bucks and change for a 5 pk. Many folks simply rewick when necessary and single coil are lasting nine months and longer without giving up. Adjustable airflow good enuf to suit a tootle puffer or moderate DTL hitter. I have 8 of the tanks and near 40 of the coils and figure I'm set for life.
