I think most mods these days are passthrough, but you might want to check the specs on yours in the manufacturers website, that should tell you if it is passthrough or not.

I don't usually charge on my computer anymore as if anything goes wrong, it might damage my computer, I generally use a wall-wart. With that said, if you are charging at work.... I'd probably still use a wall wart as I wouldn't want to have to try to explain what happened if something went wrong. If you don't have easy access to an outlet though, well, I'd say it's probably fairly safe as far as vaping (again, if it's passthrough, which it's most likely to be, but I'd check.)

Good luck,

Anna

My boilerplate answer to the question "is it safe" is always YES. I rarely go on to read the details.... Does this make me a bad person?

I'm only kidding....honestly, I rarely answer these questions. In this case, I would say I'm not familiar enough with the mod to answer. If it is a pass through, you'll be fine.

Very few mods today (none that I know of) are actually pass through. Pass through would mean that the batteries are bypassed and you're vaping straight off the USB, and the USB current simply isn't sufficient to for modern atomizers. Vape while charging is the appropriate term. What mods that allow for that do (or are supposed to do) is pause the charging while you hit the fire button. If the mod for some reason doesn't pause charging it introduces undue stress on the batteries. I'd advice against vaping while charging, just to be on the safe side. I'd also advice against charging from a computer USB port. If something goes wrong you risk damaging the motherboard of the computer. Use a USB wall adapter that is rated for at least the current the mod draws (higher is better in this case). Best to use an external charger whenever possible, of course.

If you're scared it's gonna blow up don't as it won't, but ofc it's still a bad idea in the long run if you want your batteries to last. I charge my batteries through my mod alot but i always do at least one external charge per week (more if i can),that way you're sure your batteries are charging equally :D

The Smok T-Priv uses 2x 18650 cells in series so charging them while in the mod is not recommended at all. You should remove the cells and charge them in an external charger this ensures both cells are charged to capacity equally. Even the mods that have built in batteries should be charged using a wall charger as computer USB is not designed to handle that high of amperage load and you risk damaging your motherboard. Back in the days of the ego twist batteries charging off a computer was OK because the batteries were only 5 amp max, it was the equivalent of charging you MP3 player, these new mods require 10 times the amperage. Get yourself a nite-core digi-4 or an efest Luc series external charger and charge the cells in that it will prolong the life of your cells and prevent unnecessary risks of cell venting or damage to your computer.

USB charging should be limited to emergency use only, IMHO. For all the above reasons, but primarily because the weak point is not the charger itself but the USB connector. They are very susceptible to daily wear and tear.

The primary function of the USB port is to allow processor software updates.

I can't think of any type of emergency that would require me to charge my batteries. Maybe if someone has a gun to your head and is going to pull the trigger if they can't get a puff, but that's pretty far fetched.

"Stuff" happens. What if you find yourself at work with a low battery and no spare charged battery? Given a choice between using the USB charger and buying a pack of smokes, which would you do?

Some people pack lightly when going out of town on a business trip and choose not to bring their external charger. Using the USB charger for one night is not going to cause mass hysteria.

You are probably like me. When going out of town just for a night, I pack 2 charged spare batteries and a bottle of juice. A weekend and I pack my charger and a spare tank, too. Everything fits in the zippered pocket of my carry on bag.

I've always charged batteries in my mods and havn't had a problem so far. Besides I don't want to wear out the battery door on my alien 220. Been using the same cells since the first of march and they work just fine. Do you take the battery out of your phone to charge it ? No and the micro usb ports on those last for years.
