Wow. Hard-core smoker cuts smoking significantly without even trying.

I hand-roll my own smokes, have for 37 years, using European-style tobacco (Drum, Bali Shag, etc.) A pouch lasts me about 24 hours and yields roughly 50 cigarettes. Which makes me a 2-1/2 PAD non-filter smoker. And no matter how or what ways I've tried to quit (about elebenty-faffillion times) I get utterly psychotic and depressed and wigged out and start smoking again. So I think I am pretty hard-core. I've tried every med and nicotine-replacement system and classes and Allen Carr and support groups I could find....but nope, I still go back to smoking. I've smoked since I was 17 and I am 54 now. My smoking habit has outlasted two husbands, several jobs, lots of vehicles and numerous apartments and houses in two continents and three US states. LOL.

After faffing around with disposable e-cigs for a few weeks, I finally got a "real" PV and some tasty juices. It's Wednesday evening now, I bought my last tobacco pouch about 1:30 pm Monday. Typically it would have been gone by the same time Tuesday and I would have been on my third pouch by now.

I still have half of that pouch left!! I stopped by my little local smoke shop this afternoon, meaning to get more tobacco - then realised how much I had left. So instead, I bought 10 ml of vanilla juice from there (not very good juice as it turns out but I want to support local business and I like the owner) and didn't buy more tobacco.

I didn't even start this as an effort to quit, really. Just harm reduction by cutting down. My only "rule" has been no smoking while driving. But for the last week or so, at work and in the house, I have both my smokes and my KGO within reach...and I find myself reaching for a vape more often than rolling a smoke.

I'm still sorta terrified at the idea of quitting smokes altogether but for the first time in almost four decades I'm sort of astonished that without even trying, I've cut my smoking significantly. A month ago I would be climbing the walls with only 15 or whatever cigarettes per day. Yeah vaping still delivers nicotine and some unknown (flavoring) substances, but not the 3,999 other nasty and carcinogenic compounds in cigarette smoke.

And as soon as I fill up my dedicated "smoking drawer" with more juices and cartos and batteries and whatever, I might feel brave enough to exist without having tobacco in my life. <gasp> And this is a very cool thing!

Good job! Keep at it. I was 1.5PAD/33years and am 100% vaping now (day 82 today). The only thing that cured my fear of not have smokes in my pocket was having backups to my backups. It took me a few weeks to gain confidence that vaping would do the trick. Using attys/cartos/clearos/tanks, etc is great for all-day vaping, but when I felt the worst urges to reach for a pack, dripping sessions were the best (learned quick). A couple 3 drop sessions and the worst urges were put to bed.

Hi, thanks for sharing your story, and congratulations.

I was 1.5 PAD for 50 years and was fortunate enough to discover Vaping while trying to quit for the elebenty-faffillion time after a diagnosis of emphysema. I had tried cold turkey, lozenges, gum, hypnosis, trailing off, etc. I am so glad I found this hobby. It was an easy transition for me since I was so busy fiddling with trying to find the best PV, eliquid, and tank/carto that I just never got around to smoking after my first disposable. Sure there was the occasional anxiety event, but those stopped when I found the right level of nic for me in the ejuices (18-24 mg/ml). My last cig was last year and this is the longest I've ever lasted. I haven't had a desire to actually smoke in months. I no longer wheeze and cough, my sinus's are clearer than I can remember, and I know I'll start saving money at some point (lol).

Take care and happy vaping.

23 year smoker here! My advice, start focusing on the vape, if you want a real cig spend an hour "vaping through it" first. If you still can't stand it, go ahead and have your cig. You WILL most likely get to the point that you look at the Death Stick and go "really? Why do I love you? You are gross?".

Once you get your tastebuds back, which you will with vaping, you will lose your taste for cigs. Keep up the good work!

All fun, no COPD. Vaping Rocks!

I was a 40+ year - 1 1/2 or so PAD smoker also. I went to 10 - 12 smokes a day almost instantly. Then to 7 -8 and so on without much effort. The last 2 or 3 (morning and after meals) were the hardest to give up. I did have to make an effort to get over them - upped my nic - vaped extra heavy to get through them, but did it. It took me probably a couple of months, but I got off of them. I slipped a few times with one smoke here or one smoke there - they tasted awful each time, but the draw back to them I guess was stronger than the smell and taste that came with them. I have not had one is several months now and really have no desire anymore.

Take your time, be prepared to force those last few if you have to - if I can do it anybody can...

Just have to say love this thread. Reminder of how supportive and wonderful the people on the ECF can be and that lives are saved here every day.

Don't beat yourself up trying to quit - keep doing what you're doing. For many of us our tastes change and the stinkies taste a bit like licking an ashtray after a few days/weeks.

Congrats on your healthy choice and taking the first steps toward being smoke free.

I smoked for 40+ years and bought a PV on a whim thinking it might help cut back on my pack and a half I was going through. 24 hours later I had my last one and even though I've had a few moments of panic those moments have been manageable. I also tried to quit about "elebenty-faffillion" (I love that) times, vaping astonished my by how effective it was.

Even if you don't quit I hope you find some freedom from the cigarettes, and hope you know that other people who have smoked as long as you have been able to find some freedom from them. Best of luck and take care.

Congratulations!! I recently started vaping also (March1), I was smoking around 1.5 PAD, now it's down to 3-4 a day. At one time it was 3 packs of Kool super longs a day. I agree with Semiretired the last few a day are the hardest. I have already avoided over 50 packs of smokes since starting vaping. I started smoking when I was 15 (peer pressure) and even after many failed quits, one was for a year, I still smoked for 45 years. Now after 35 days I feel 5-10 years younger, healthier and have so much more energy it's amazing! Keep on keeping on.
