I've been in and out of this vape thing for several years now (more out than in). Recently, I decided to make another attempt at it and I see that the gear and the technology has made some major advances. I really know very little about new tanks and sub-ohm vaping.

I started out with a little cigarette looking thing mostly because that's all there was. Moved up to a cigar looking thing from Volcano (the Inferno) and jumped on some new little tank thing they came out with (which leaked badly). Later, got a box mod. Moved to an Ego twist. Later still, got a Vamo with a little Kanger tank. I like the Vamo/Kanger setup except that it is tall and skinny so it likes to fall over alot.

Sub-ohm and TC seems to be where is at now so I bought a 75w Eleaf pico for this attempt. I found out right away that these sub-ohm things make some hot vape, so I'm kind of struggling with that now. I read posts about the suggested wattage range for the coils I'm using, and see what everyone else's settings are and I can't get anywhere close. Modern vapers must have lungs of Nomex, I guess. Luckily, my little non sub-ohm Kanger tank works great on the new mod but I feel like I'm missing something by not sub-ohming. Eventually, I suppose you won't be able to buy non-sub coils so I'd better figure this out.

So, I'm looking for advise on how to tame the sub-ohm beast. I've got the Melo 3 tank wide open and the airflow seems great. vaping 6mg juice over a .75 ohm coil. Right now my comfort zone is between 15.5 and about 18w. Flavor seems good there, vapor production seems a little inconsistant. I'm not interested in filling a room with vapor but I would like to feel it in my lungs. I'll keep messing with it, but I'm hoping for advise to shorten the learning curve.

Thanks ahead of time.

Hi and Welcome back to vaping!

First, you don't have to sub-ohm to be satisfied and get your nic fix. I've only been vaping since Nov. 2013, and have a large variety of different clearos, tanks, RBAs, tube shaped mods, box mods, etc., etc. I don't sub-ohm with any of them, and I've still never even been tempted to have a cigarette. I've been vaping 6mg eliquids since 3 years ago, and get all the nic I need vaping at my 1.2-2.1ohms. There are many of us in that same range, too!

Most important thing, IMO, is get a set-up that works for YOU! Don't worry about what set-ups others are using, how they're vaping, what eliquids they vape, etc. Everyone is different, and we all have our needs met by whatever methods, set-ups, nic mg, and eliquids satisfy us personally.

Like I said, I don't sub-ohm, but anyone I know who does...never vapes higher than about 3mg nic eliquids. You might want to try lower than your 6mg if you continue to try sub-ohming.

Others will be along I'm sure to offer suggestions and hints for you, too. Just keep trying different things, and sooner or later...you'll hit on your own "happy spot" ohm-wise, and in every other way.

Forgot this - About what you wrote: "Luckily, my little non sub-ohm Kanger tank works great on the new mod but I feel like I'm missing something by not sub-ohming. Eventually, I suppose you won't be able to buy non-sub coils so I'd better figure this out."

If that works great...I'd keep using it for now! As far as not being able to buy non-subohm coils...IMO, it won't be a problem. There are millions of vapers who don't sub-ohm, and companies will keep making them for those people. You can always learn to make your own, too, to use in RBAs. That'll always be another option for being able to vape for those who don't sub-ohm! I make my own 1.2-1.8 coils to use with RBAs.

As JC pointed out there's nothing to say you have to use subohm setups. They're great for clouds, and can be good for flavor, but really unnecessary to get the nic and get off cigs. If you are looking for more throat hit (lung hit is sorta subohm territory) and vape in a mtl style, raise the nic, and get juice with a bit more PG. That will help you on the hit front. The nice thing about all the choices now is that you can take something like a Pico, which is a great little mod, and put just about anything (that fits) on it and get the type of vape you prefer.

That said, getting your current setup to work (no sense buying more stuff until you have a better idea of what you like) is slowly turn the power up on the 0.75 ohm coil. Open up the airflow. The more air you draw, the more "lunglike" it can be, and will also keep the vape from getting too hot. Good luck!

You have a mod that will cover you through most of what is done in today's vape industry. I'd recommend doing some searching for a tank that meets your needs and wants exactly. I have a few Uwell Crown clones that i absolutely love, but each person has their own favorites

And you don't have to use very high wattages even with subohm coils. Sure, some tanks and coils aren't really suited for lower wattages, but the recommended wattage ranges on coil heads are often exaggerated.

Welcome and glad you joined.
In General higher ohm coils/lower wattage (generally MTL) vaping will:
Heat the coil slower, which may produce “less” vapor
Provide A “cooler” tasting vape, can produce more flavor
May use less E-Juice (<$ less money)
Prolong battery life (<$)
Prolong coil life (<$)
Prolong wick life (<$)
May result in less PV maintenance/Issues
Less irritation to non vapers
Aids stealth vaping
May be better in the long run healthwise (<$)
What works for me: RDA, building a single coil at 2 ohms (30ga. ~4-5wrap spaced) YMMV.

Thanks to all who posted. Good information. Here is what I've figured out so far (with your help), maybe it will help others as well.

Gear DOES make a big difference. The stock Melo 3 tank that came with my Pico was good, but I changed it out to a Baby Beast. I don't want to sound like an advertisement, but that made a huge difference! Airflow in the Baby is adjustable from non-existent to all the air you can handle (I've got mine about 3/4 open). I'm running my coil below the "suggested" range and still get plenty of flavor and enough vapor to fill my old smoker's lungs without flooding the atomizer. I don't have any heat issues, vape is consistent, and I can do either MTL or DTL without coughing. I found out that DTL satisfies me more.

Maybe that old Kanger tank will stay in the drawer after all.

So glad that you're back! I was away for a while myself so I feel your pain!

I think I'm going to have to jump on this Baby Beast if the Pico can run it with stock coils. I've tried rebuilding my own, I really did - just shake your heads because even the cats were embarrassed watching me.

Just jumped back into the world again after a few years out in "smoke it until you pee yourself coughing" (long sad story which I won't bore you with) land and you all have my head spinning! I was just getting the hang of volts and now it's watts and ohms and subohms and I think I need a translator, LOL.

Anyways, it's a wonderous feeling to be back and glad I'm not the only one making a return!

my condolences on getting the baby... lmao, the juice just magically vanishes from it i swear! i'm running mine about 35 watts and i've still gone 3 baby tanks and 2 big baby tanks today already(hey i don't sleep much!). i would strongly suggest you consider getting the separate RBA that you can get for it, it works well and will slow down the juice consumption a little... maybe... they are great tanks. oh and if you like the baby, there is a kanger tank you might like as well, the pro tank 4.
