Wrapin your own e-cig coil - an issue

Hi all,
I am using Evod cartomizer and am trying to wrap myself my own e-cig coil. I have actually succeded in doing so, but I could only wrap it 4 times since there is so little space. However, I found this on one web page: „You need to make sure that the resistance of your coil fits within the tolerance range for safe operation of your battery. You don't want to draw too many amps off of your battery and have it EXPLODE on you, do ya?”

I do not have any kind of ohm meter so I am just trying to get the sense if this is safe to do and can I aproximate ohms with number of wrapings.

Thank you all!

Of course the best thing is to test with a meter, which not only tells you ohms, but also if you have a short or not. That being said, there are charts out there that you can figure out your approximate ohms, assuming you know your wire material, gauge, and the diameter of your wick.

What kind of wire did you use?

You need to use resistance while like 30 gauge kanthal or nichome wire.

What is your power source?

Just started wrapping coils myself and have been using an ohm meter to test them... 3 of 5 had shorts and would have been dangerous on an unprotected battery. I'd suggest picking up a cheap $10 tester before using your coils.

Did you put topwicks? If you don't put a top wick, when you press down the spire, the spire can end up touching the coil and shorting it out.

While it's good to have an ohm meter (or at least a device that can read ohms, like an MVP 2), you don't necessarily need one for a regulated device like an EVOD. I'm assuming you're using some type of regulated ego battery with overdraw protection. If you're using something unregulated, don't even bother until you get something that can read ohms.

If you can only wrap it 4 times, you must have a giant wire. I can wrap a coil with 28 gauge 10 times and fit it in the EVOD base and have it read 1.5 ohms. If you have a 1/16th drillbit, that's a great start. Wrap your wire around it as many times as you think would be good. Not sure what gauge you have so I can't give you a precise number of wraps. When you're wrapping, make sure your wraps are as close together as possible. You don't want them spaced apart, which is what I'm guessing you're doing based on your difficulty.

Once you've wrapped it, squeeze it together with a pair of tweezers. It'll help compress the coil together and help it retain its shape. If you have a lighter lying around, take the flame to the coil and wait until it glows red hot, then compress it again. It'll make it a lot smaller than you think it is. Afterwards you shouldn't really have a problem fitting it in the base. You won't have to worry about your battery exploding because it won't fire if it's under a safe threshold. Hope I helped.

First off what gauge wire are you using? As stated before some people and get a lot of wraps in a small place, that will come with practice.

Next what size wraps are you trying to make ie 5/64, 1/8, 3/32 etc

Both of those factors will help determine the ohms. Since you do not have an omh's tester, do you have a multimeter? You can always use a multimeter to test your coil.

I would never build a coil and not either test it with and ohm tester or a multimeter before using it.

Do it safe or Do Not do it at all. We want people to enjoy vaping and stop smoking, however we want it done safely.

If you are going to be building, you want to have an ohm meter or at least a device with an ohm meter. An ohm meter is part of the building game, an essential tool. Period.. get one.

And yes, it is possible to overdrive an ego style battery, sometimes that circruitry don't pass mustard, and she will go... I know this for a fact. It's called toss, duck and cover, and grab the animals.

Thank you all. I ordered an ohm meter/voltmeter from the local store :)

I am using kanthal 0.2mm wire and, a 2mm silicate string to make the coils. My power source is "ego battery, 3.7V, 1100 mah".

However, I don't know anything else about the battery since it is the only info I can find about it - it is smth like a commercialized best buy in my city, which I bought for starters.

Ok; you should be able to get 5 or 6 wraps.

Aim for 2 ohms.
1.5 is ok; 2.5 is ok.
