Using 2mm ekowool with 30 gauge kanthal on a russian 91.

So far I have probably failed over 17 coils. Either they are too high ohms, short out etc.

Recently I have began to get a very consistent ohms with less shorts.

What causes shorts? Some of the coil touching other pieces?

How high do I want the coil off of the atomizer?

So now that I am being much more consistent.. I am having major issues keeping the ohms low. The lower the better right? I can't seem to get it below 3. I am folding the ekowool and doing like 4 wraps around it. I guess using less kanthal overall will lower the ohms? I find this difficult because it has to at least be big enough to go around the ekowool. I have a 1/16th drill bit but of course if I wrap the wire around it.. it is wayyy too tiny for the ekowool.

Please help, I am seriously ready to give up on rba's and I don't want to :(

how low do you want to go in OHMs? if you take the 30g wire and do 4 wraps around the wick that should be fairly low by the time you tie it down to the atomizer. once you have it secured try and space the wraps of wire fairly even with a Tweezers make sure no wraps are touching each other or touching anything but the screw down area on each end of the coil. if your Eko is 2mm or more you don't realy need to fold it and wrap it you can wrap around it in a single strand the Russian doesn't need a lot of wick so long as its in the channels. look at this vid its how I did mine except I used 26g and 4 wraps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdXjBWf8Pc0

Well I had it at 1.8, and now that ive assembled it and tested it all along the way and filled it with juice, it's jumping from 1.8 to 3.0. So I get a really good draw and then .... I looked in and it looks like nothing moved. Any suggestions? This has been wayyyy harder then I thought it would have been.

After you build the coil, when you put the tank on top of it, some part of the metal tank is touching some part of the coil.

No.
There is a sweet spot.

The lower the ohms, the closer to a short.

Check the decking for the positive screw post. Mine was loose a bit when it arrived so when u screw down the coil or even sometimes when yo screw the chimney on, it tweaked that decking a bit and the corner was touching the deck for the - post. I took out the pin in the 510 connector and tightened the inside screw in that hole to tighten the deck down while holding it flush with that insulator seat thingy. Then it stopped shorting on me. Let me know if that works

I'm picking up cotton soon and I'm going to give this a shot.

Messed with it and have it to 2.1. Sorry for the panicky posts but at this point all of this advice is whats going to help me be successful. I have watched a ton of videos and read other posts, and havn't had much luck so far.

No worries man. Everyone's been super helpful for me and I'm sure everyone is pumped to be paying it all forward and swapping war stories. Pretty rad community so far! Fire away, I'm going to keep asking too!

Take heart, you're probably more than 90% there! You will be successful in the end. Make sure to find some organic cotton as non-organic needs to be boiled first.

I boiled my organic stuff anyway. They might have still used organic pesticides etc. 15 mins, better safe than sorry IMHO.

I *just* started building coils for my new KFL+, and my 2nd one turned out just about perfect. 1.7Ω; I used 30ga, 5 wraps around 7/64 drillbit. The 7/64 is simple as pie to thread a wick into.

I'm using Peaches and Cream cotton yarn, boiled twice, thoroughly dried. At first I tried a whole strand, but it was a bit too much, so I yanked one of the 4 strands out of the yarn, leaving just 3, made a loop on a small piece of 30ga wire, and threaded it, piece of cake, and absolutely perfect hits since I closed down the airflow about 3/4 of the way. The TH is so intense I had to turn it down from 7w to 6.5w.

I just started rebuilding my own coils, with the guidance of my distributor. 2 out of 3 were good, one obviously has a short, as when I installed it, after pressing the button on my ego style device, there were 3 quick flashes of the light. The others doesn't do it & are running around 2.4-.2.5 ohms (where I like it). The great thing was that I didn't have to lay a flavor wick on top, the coil having the only wick installed.

Awaiting 2 shipments, a 100 foot of TemCO A1 Kanthal 32 gauge wire & 6 feet of the ekowool 2mm braided wick, both were recommended my my distributor. The wire should be here by Saturday & the wick Monday, if not before.

Also, my distributor was concerned for my safety on this, so he sold me an Atomizer Ohm Meter that works with 510 & Ego coils. This will ensure that I get consistent results also.

It's going to take some practice & patience on this, but in the long run there will be a lot of cash saved. When needed, the rubber or silicone Resistance Insulators can also be purchased in the 10 packs for $4.49, less than the price of a 5 pack of KangerTech coils & are reusable many times.
