Hey all, I started vaping in December 2013. I was really enjoying flavours, particularly desserts like apple pie and custard. However, about 4 months later around April 2014, I started to lose flavour in my palate, thinking it was vaper's tongue. I was drinking lots of water too and kind of holding on to some flavour. Flavour would come and go. Eventually I gave up and have been vaping pure VG unflavoured for the last year and a half. Every now and then I try one of my flavoured juices either in my dripper or in a tank. I still cannot taste juice properly. It's very hard to describe other than to say, there is never any sweetness anymore when it hits the back of my mouth. All I get is a very, very vague flavour of some sort which tastes like it's mixed with soap. If for instance I vape say, peach, I can sort of taste peach but with no sweetness whatsoever, so it's horrible. I've just bought a new atomiser and put some custard in it that used to taste great to me. Now it just tastes... weird! It's like my tastebuds are numb and yet there's no loss of taste with food, savoury and sweet.

My mouth feels very dry all the time from vaping VG, but I don't feel dehydrated. I really don't know how to fix this. Could constant VG be doing this, do I need to stop vaping VG and go to 100% PG? It really is like my tastebuds just aren't being sensitive to flavour with juices, like they're not picking flavours up anymore.
Frustrating because I really miss flavours and unflavoured is boring, just a means to an end to get the nicotine.

I used to vape at 3.7v on an evod when I started vaping and could taste flavours fine. I don't think it's anything to do with my settings or hardware to be honest, but more to do with me. It's honestly like vaping massively watered down flavours and with 90% of the sweetness gone, with a little soapiness sprinkled on. I'm currently vaping a dessert juice which is several months steeped and I'm still not tasting it properly, tastes disgusting. But I remember how it used to taste, it was delicious. Can't taste juices in my Kayfun, and I bought a Kanger subtank mini v2 today and still no improvement. Running that between 16 and 20w on my Sigelei 50w at 1.4ohms. At 26w it gave me burnt hits.

I don't think it's anything to do with my settings or hardware to be honest, but more to do with me.

Although I second the notion to double check equipment and try some variety - other flavor 'tests' I've had luck with at various stages of muted flavor are:
  • Have a saltine or two, wait a few minutes, vape
  • Citrus sorbet, proper one made with actual lemon or orange - not just artificial - wait a few, vape
  • TONGUE SCRAPER (I kid you not) - vape
  • I vape a mild menthol, as of the other day I switched to Black Note Solo, for 1/2ml a day and that helps me between other flavors
With all that said I'm increasingly going unflavored and nothing I tried was nearly as good as Nude Nicotine's 100% VG for ~no~ flavor. And when I mix a little flavor in now, I really taste it.

Good luck, Cheers, -Mags

It may be vapers sinuses. This is much like having a cold. If you can't smell it you can't taste it. To test, vape in front of a mirror. Exhale through your nostrils. If the expelled vapor is fairly even from each nostril you probably do not have vapers sinuses. If there is a difference you know the source of the problem.

I've had it since the third week of vaping. It can be managed to some degree by keeping the sinuses clean. Get the bathroom steamy. While taking a shower snort saline solution into each nostril. Blow out the water and mucus several times. Use a mint flavored mouthwash after brushing your teeth and tongue. Antihistamines and decongestants also work. Afrin nasal drops also helps with the congestion. It is trial and error to find out what works best at any given time.

Vapers sinuses can cause custards, yogurt, milk and some vanilla flavors to taste terrible. Some flavors that I can taste are nothing like they should be. It can change at anytime day or night. I have found that simple strong flavors work best. Try menthol, mint, candy cane, cinnamon, black licorice/absinthe, black clove, blackberry, and/or lemon. Pineapple and key lime can be iffy. Butterscotch without caramel is worth a try. For some unknown reason the smallest amount of caramel or hazelnut will completely dominate any other flavors. Coffee is bitter. Tea is ok. Anything with butyric acid is horrid. I have not tried them but tobacco, bourbon, black cherry and other spices are possibilities.

I vape 60-70% pg/40-30% vg. I have compared the same flavors with 50/50 and there is a noticeable increase in flavor with higher pg. With pre-made liquids I get a bit more of the desired flavor with lower nic. I think that is because the pre-made liquids are using a nic that has a taste of its own.

The ability to customize flavors is the reason I started DIY. I use Nude Nicotine because it has no flavor, throat hit, or peppery sensation to interfere with the e-liquid.

ETA: I use drip tips with a narrow opening which concentrates the vapor. The opening is slightly wider than the stick of a Q-tip with the cotton removed.

Thanks very much for the suggestions guys! I don't think I have a sinus issue, vapour is coming out of my nose evenly, like a raging bull. I'm definitely going to vape higher PG, at the cost of it always making the tip of my tongue a bit sore. I'm currently vaping 65VG/35VG juice and am about to tip it out. I think the problem though is my tongue, mostly near the back of the tongue. It's felt constantly dry for over a year, it feels like sandpaper and there's a dry taste in my mouth even when I haven't vaped during the day. I can tell that's what's stopping me tasting properly. Almost feels like there's a film coating it blocking the tastebuds, hence the lack of sweetness or saltiness I guess, as opposed to olfactory issues. I've got a tongue scraper which I'll start using again, but short of completely stopping vaping for a few months, I don't feel optimistic of regaining flavour.

I have a form of geographic tongue which I suspect contributes to this, it kind of wipes out areas of papillae on the tongue.

There are a lot of flavors I've never been able to taste except in an EVOD, including ones that are so good they may be better (in an EVOD) than anything else in anything. The effect has been consistent.

At the same square as you. Started vaping about a year ago, still while smoking cigarettes. Flavours were a Riptripper "wow factor" Strawberry was really nice but also had enough sweetness to make a pre-school get caries. I had a very bad rotation, consisting of 2 clearos and about 6-8 juices, because my nautilus mini something had busted coils that made any juice taste bad no matter what. Still I could keep tasting the juice for 4 or so months. which is when I stopped smoking.
nowadays I have two kanger mini and a goblin mini, menthol which I can still taste fine I guess. fruits and custards etc, not so much. .... it gets too in-depth

Vapers fatigue for 3-4 months here. Can get a small taste from banana etc, it's nice, but after 3 or so puffs, no flavor, but boy does it smell good
One sinus is always blocked, think its always been that, however I can get a "wound" inside that heals slow and bad when vaping(assuming)
Tried going unflavored for a week or so.
My blends consist around 70-80 vg since it's easy to get from the local pharmacy, I'm going to try making 60% pg blend since most premade I buy are at 50/50. (not that much of a taste). at least not near the amount Rip talks about "KICKASS FLAVOUR"
I drink tons of water. Tried sniffing coffe. lemon juice. going menthol only for a week. Going unflavored for a week. brushing tounge
I use Rayon with a tight wicking, (it's suppose to be that way?) 23ga normal build and dual on youde 0.3 and 0.15. I used to use normal eco cotton.
If VG is a culprit, how does the PG intolerant deal with vapers fatigue?

Edit: I recently bought Grandma's cinnamon buns from nicoticket. It was the first time In a while I got a decent flavour. It was something I dont normally vape
