Your opinion The Perfumers Apprentice Flavors

So I just got my first setup (2 ego twists, an atty, Vivi nova, and two clearomizers w/ no specified brand or name) and all the stuff to mix some flavors up. I got my flavors from the flavors apprentice section perfumersapprentice.com. Now it's probly got a lot to do with me being a noob, but I'm pretty sure that that flavors were a bit off...I got 4 of them- Caramel, Mocha, cotton candy, and cappuccino. The only one that really tasted decently like it's flavor was caramel. I used the tod muller e juice calc, and left the flavor at the default 20%. On the drops it told me like 24 for flavor but I did about 26-29 because the drops were small- given the little pipettes they included were the only thing I had small enough to get the flavor out. But it still just didn't taste right to me. I haven't gotten my nicotine base in yet because it was a little slow on shipping out so it's a day behind, idk of that really effects flavor but I don't expect it would. Are These just bad flavors? Bad vendor? Where do you get flavors for when you DIY? I know this probably belongs in the DIY section but its really more to do with the vendor/flavor than it is on DIY itself so yea..

P.S this is about a 60%/40% mix of pg/vg.

"Drops" are inaccurate. You need to use ml to recreate a recipe. Drops are also tedious.

I like the concentrates and use a 1 ml, 3 ml and 10 ml syringe to mix small amounts. I use beakers, 25 ml and 10 ml, to mix larger amounts. That way I can recreate exactly what I need. The only time I use a pipette is for enhancers that are 1 or 2 drops per 5 ml then I use the same pipette for that particular additive.

As for the flavors, they are so individual it is hard to say. Luckily they come in small amounts that aren't that expensive so you can try them. I got a caramel from a new maker, and used it in a tried and true recipe, it messed up my whole recipe. Once you find one you like, don't interchange them.

Good luck, have patience, and write every detail of what you are mixing down so when you find the right recipe, you can make it again and again and at different quantities.

What calc do you use? How do I know what my flavor % needs to be? the reason I do drops on the flavors is because they are super tiny and it's hard to get the flavor out with my measured dropper. I was aware this would probably be kind of inaccurate but I didn't think it would be enough to make a substantial difference? Oh and btw do you generally find TFA flavors good or do you order elsewhere?

20% is a little high to start off at. If you use too much, it can actually depreciate the flavor. What happens to me, is a strong perfumy or alcohol taste if I use too much. Better to start at a low amount and add to it, than use more.

I did think of that as a potential problem, but I guess I figured it would make it taste better

I don't use 20% of anything, I like the flavor concentrates so use 1% to 10%. I get my flavors from whatever company can sell me the ones that taste good to me, at the best price. Some are TFA, DIYflavorshack, ecigexpress.... I have had to try different flavorings to find the ones I liked. I replaced a caramel from DIY with the TFA, and it was a disaster, with only 2%. But you like TFA caramel, so we are completely different. And it isn't all of TFA; in the same recipe I use TFA, wizard labs, and DIYflavorshack.

I use the "ejuice me up" calculator, it allows me to save my recipes and name them. I have about 5 of one recipe, and got it perfected based on the trial and error. It will give you drops (gtt) and mls. So you can do it either way, but are your pipettes calibrated the same as the drops used with whoever made the calculator?

DIY is trial and error. There are going to be some hits, and misses, and figuring out YOUR best recipe is the fun part. Most of what I made is vapable, but wouldn't make again. But when you find the ones that work, it is so worth it!

So TFA is good if YOU like it. Someone does, because they wouldn't be in business if no one liked it.

So you think I should just try starting with less flavor and go from there? How do you normally determine your percentage

I looked up every recipe I could find from every other person who already tried the percentages on the different brands. I got that from the DIY threads, pages and pages of them. There are some great people who shared them :toast:

But here's some tips I can give you:

use less flavorings to start. If you don't like it with just a little bit, chances are you aren't going to like it with more. If you like it keep adjusting it until you get to the point its best. Or add another flavor that might go with it.

If you hate it, chances are steeping won't make you like it. If you like it, steeping could make it wonderful. You just can't steep out nasty, but can make a good mix great.
