I normally only use organic cotton myself. I never used to boil it until i picked up a bag at the pharmacy and it said "whitened with hydrogen peroxide" so now i boil it too.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) breaks down to H2O and O when heated, so it's practically safe, and if you don't know H2O is water and O is oxygen. So there is no need to boil. And I would not suggest boiling either because when your drying it you don't know what could be growing in the cotton.
