How long to charge a battery

hey all
I've got a Npro and a 901, both have the same charger, 'cept for the connection of course. Indicator light on both goes to green from 1/2 hour to 1 hour regardless of the condition of the battery when the charger is first plugged in?

I've seen through other posts that the batts are supposed to charge for anywhere from 3 hours to 8?

Appears to me the indicator light on these chargers is probably not something to rely on, so how do I go about getting a full charge w/o damaging the batts?

8 hours initially, then 3-4 hours there after should cover you (with green on)
