Some questions about wick safety, materials, ect.

Okay, so at this point in my vaping career I have tried many different types of "toppers" atomizers, cartomizers, clearomizers, tanks, ect. I have about 10 in my collection to date. I am probably very soon going to try my first RBA/Genesis style atomizer.

So, before doing that (which i am very exited about) I have some questions and/or concerns about the wick material. I am aware that most people find silica wicks to be fairly safe. I have little concern about inhaling silica fibers in any amount that would be potentially dangerous. I am not sure what the cartomizer filler is made of, though. Is it silica? Or some sort of plastic material? Because there is a lot more filler material, is it likely that whatever it's made of, I may be inhaling more of it's components if it is repeatedly heated?

Because I am going to be buying my first RBA soon, I also am wondering about the SS mesh used to wick these devices. In short, am I inhaling some chromium dioxide or other component materials vaping with a SS wick? Is this a potentially better (safer) alternative to the clearo/carto wick material?

I have read countless threads here regarding these types of questions but I am hoping to get some concise answers or at least a better idea on the general consensus on the matter of wick material safety.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer/speculate here.

Happy vaping,

Alexander

Really easy, use some cotton balls. Roll between finger and thumb to get a wick shape in 2 or 3mm thickness and coil them up. One thing I would suggest though, is not to wrap your coils too tight to the cotton wick, because cotton expands a lot when wet. So you'll just strangle the coil if it's too tightly wound. Also do not dry burn the cotton, it needs to be wet when you fire it up. The cotton will just char if you try to dry burn it.
But basically there's not a lot of difference to making a silica wick, compared to cotton, it just takes a little longer :D

You know, someone told me to just take the cotton off a q-tip and use it as a wick. I tried it, and I got a burnt horrible mess.

Complete user error on my part, but if you want to try a cotton wick and only have q-tips on hand (every household has them right?) then it's an easy way to try - and your balls will remain unmolested.

By the way, loving the lumberjack shirt with the hat look in your avi - but you look like a Canadian.
