My wife thought she was helping and picked up 2 protected ICR batteries an 18650 and an 18350 yesterday. They are both Panasonic I believe (not labeled, but look vaguely like some pannys I've seen; haven't bothered to look them up yet). Can I somewhat safely use these on my mechs to run maybe a carto tank or something? Or should I relegate these to the junk drawer until such time as I get a flashlight or regulated mod that can use them? I know I should probably not use them with my rebuildables.

You can use a protected ICR battery in a mechanical mod. People have been doing that for several years now. If used properly and with common sense, these are reasonably safe to use.

With the arrival of IMR (Li-Mn) and hybrid batteries on the market now on the market, current wisdom is that they are a safer alternative to protected ICR batteries due to their use of "safer chemistry". These batteries are also considered "high drain" batteries which regulated mods, mechanical mods which are using a Kick, and RBA/RDA's require. This is because they will have a higher Amp limit than ICR batteries have.

ICR batteries use a volatile (flamable) chemistry, therefore use built-in protection circuits. Should that circuit fail, the battery has potential to go into thermal runaway and vent with flames. A safe chemistry battery can also go into thermal runaway, but the results will be less dramatic without flames.

Thanks Baditude. I'd read all that previously when I got my first mech and RDA which is why I ordered my AW IMR's. I know that the ICR's have been used in mechs before, but went out of favor with the new chemistry. I think maybe I'll use them with my carto tanks since those all run around 1.5 to 2 ohm, should be pretty safe.
