Innokin iTaste VV

    I recently purchased an Innokin iTaste VV which I am most pleased with.
    However, I noticed it only charges up to 4.2 volts before the automatic shut-off takes effect.
    I called the dealer who sold it to me and they told me that was normal. Most of their batteries do the same thing.
    It seems odd it is adjustable up to 5.0 volts if it is only capable of charging up to 4.2.
    Does anyone have any insight, either specific or generic?

    Hello and welcome to ecf.

    Most of the batteries do only charge up to 4.2. Running it at a higher vv will drain it quickly, but if that is where you like your hit, then....
    I think most of the carto/cartomizer will start to burn the ejuice before you reach 5 volts on a consistent basis. Dunno, you can try if you like.

    If I'm not mistaken all ecig vv, vv/vw devices run on batteries that only charge to 4.1 or so maximum charge. It's the electronic circuitry in the device that "bumps up" the voltage higher than that. Of course it drains your batteries faster to do this.

    The max battery voltage of the Innokin iTaste VV is 4.2V, the max working voltage is 5V

    I don't understand how any electronic circuitry could increase the voltage beyond what the source output is.
    Anyone have any additional insight?

    Variable devices use boost and buck regulators. This allows the voltage to be controlled by digital mechanisms..which are essentially tap changers, like you'd find on transformers or regulators in power distribution.

    Within the electronics is a "booster" which can pump the voltage up. There is actually a separate Booster that can be attached to an eGo and boost the voltage from 3.3 up to 4.7 volts.

    Interesting! I have never heard of such a thing.
    I still don't understand it, but apparently it is what it is.

    The bottom line is when this voltage conversion is done, if your output is higher than the input from the battery the charge of the battery will dissipate faster, but with the VV, you can at least plug it in and use the "pass through" ability to keep vaping.
