I had a bit of a scare when my joyetech 650mah battery with a vivinova tank started atomising by itself beside me ,i heard it crackling away and picked it up to turn it off as i thought it may have been sitting on the button or something, but the light was not on and the button was not responding,so i had to unscrew the clearomiser to stop it ,by this time it was getting really hot and almost to the point of burning my hands, needless to say i threw that battery away.Anyone else had a similar problem????????

This is kinda of my fear with many of these cheaper Li Ion batteries that are used in these e-cigs. I bet the batteries in your's and my Ego's are made in China, and I dont know if the batteries in the Ego's are protected or not.

It sounds like your battery short circuited somehow, which means the internal positive and negative circuitry got crossed somehow. With cheap Chinese batteries its much more of a likelihood than with good quality Panasonic, Sanyo, Sony, or LG Li Ion batteries made in Japan. But they would cost 2 times as much at least.(but its probably worth it!)

If this kind of thing ever happens, get it out of your house as quickly and safely as possible! Or toss it into a bucket and cover it and bring it outside, etc. You just dont want it to catch your house on fire...

Yep, had it happen several times. Once was a brand new battery. I love the egos for out and about but when my last 3 go, no more. I will use some of the smaller 'mod' type where you change out batteries.

OTOH, I had it happen on a 6v saber touch so I am not saying it is only the egos that do this.

I've had the same thing happen twice once a ego style (valcano) another with a Bolt mod the bolt the button malfunctioned. I'm awaiting my shop to repair it now the other i used some cheapy fluid and when it leaked on my connector it ate the gromet separating the posative pin and the threaded part. after that it killed itself got warm and died no boom no smoke just dead :( i miss it. my bolt too glad to have about 7 mods though.

Seems to be quite a few eGo style PVs are failing with the vivi tanks.
Just reading though some of these in this thread is seems the most common failure mode reported is still an overloaded Mosfet switch failing as a short as indicated by 'continuous firing of the carto'.
Continuous use with Low resistance cartos (1.5 ohms) is a sure way to fry an eGo. Occasional short circuits at the connector end is another.
Juices that melt the center pin insulator are just plain scary, but the most likely cause was connector abuse.

Whatever the true failure rate of the eGo is, the human induced failure rate is higher.

IT never goes over well when you pass the blame for a failure back to the user. Sorry about that.

Some things to watch out for is to NEVER over tighten a carto onto an eGo. NEVER. Once, and it's over. Expecially it the outer shell contact of the carto is a little long or the end is a little damaged. Cartos damage eGos more than any other cause.

I also hate hearing about the IGNORANT recommendation to pry up the center pin on an eGo.

The pin is designed to not rotate in the insulator, to keep from twisting the little wire going from the pin to the circuit board inside. It also has a flange on top to PRESS AGAINST the insulator. If you pry it up the carto will just push it down and turn it in the process. The raised pin will not put enough pressure against the carto center pin to make a good electrical connection. A lifted pin may actually SHORT OUT against the shell of the carto, killing your eGo in the process. Prying it up also sets you up for juice leakage into the eGo circuitry. It's not so much the juice, but the hygroscopic nature of PG/VG that absorbs water from the air causing internal connections to corrode. Play with the center pin of the carto if you must.

Troubleshooting eGO FAILURES via the internet makes for an interesting read. Some of the "5 click ON/OFF" suggestions are a waste of good bandwidth :) If it's flashing at you, it's ON. If it starts flashing with a carto on before you even press the button, it has a shorted Mosfet, and will not work. Oh, and the eGo will never know it has an OPEN carto on it.

If all the above was too complicated just remember,
don't eff with the eGo center pin,
don't over tighten a carto, not even once,
funny flashing means something is wrong.

    EDIT:
Most eGo users don't seem to either have a voltmeter, or really care to troubleshoot electrical problems with one. Fine, it's complicated :) How about a cheap one dollar 3 ohm carto, or a 4 dollar 2.5 ohm atty? Don't like vaping those? Fine, keep it for troubleshooting. 2.5 to 3 ohms is a safe way to troubleshoot. Lightly screw it in until it makes connection and see it the eGo 'Likes' it. Now, if your eGo doesn't 'Like' your fancy dancy tank, it's probably not the eGo that is at fault.

People have learned not to get caught with only one battery or only one tank, but what about one $3 charger?

So, do the [ Vision?] vivi nova have some issues? I'm happy with my Vision clearomizers-long and short wick, but, was going to try the Vision vivi nova for more capacity.

Regardless of what you choose to use ALWAYS look to see what the depth of the center post of the atty/tank/carto is.
The eGo battery is designed to use heads that the center post depth is FLUSH with the outer ground portion of the connector. You will find cartos (like come with the SD Keyring) that have a recessed center post, and won't work on an eGo without using an extension with a long center post. You will also find things (like the Nova tanks) that have an extended center post, and if over tightened on an eGo will push the post down shorting the mosfet ckt or switch.

The bottom line is that the eGo/Riva/Kgo style batteries are a great design when used as intended. When using heads that they were not designed for it's 'user beware'.
    hint:
The use of a proper adaptor/extension eliminates most of the risks, even if it doesn't look good.
