From a safety point of view, your best bet is to buy ready-made materials.

For DIY purposes, once you have enough knowledge that you feel able to go down that road, then perhaps the best way is to buy PG or VG nicotine base of around 100mg or possibly 200mg strength, sold for e-cigarette refill mixing purposes. It needs to be handled with care. Using any other type of materials is not recommended, especially in the case of those who have no experience of chemistry lab procedures or the materials involved. It just isn't safe.

Also, some other obvious facts need to be pointed out:

1. When doing DIY mixing, the first thing you need to buy - not the last - is a nicotine strength testing kit (get one on Ebay). It's not sensible to make up refills without really knowing their strength.

2. If you are using materials that do not come in standard form, then a nicotine strength testing kit is vital.

3. You need to be sure that materials used are of pharmaceutical grade. Nothing else should be inhaled.

Pure nicotine (a very dangerous substance in the pure form) is a liquid. Nicotine is available in a "powder form" for oral use; this is, according to Wikipedia:
Nicotine Polacrilex is nicotine bound to an ion-exchange resin (polymethacrilic acid, such as Amberlite IRP64 or Purolite C115HMR...). It is added to gums and hard lozenges used for nicotine replacement therapy in smoking cessation. The use of the polymer as a delivery system maximizes the amount of nicotine released and absorbed by the oral mucosa. 80 to 90 percent of the nicotine released from the gum is absorbed by the mouth.

I would be very hesitant about possibly introducing a polymer into my lungs. Plus the fact that it's doubtful that the polymer would dissolve in PG/VG anyway.

Hi ,

I want to start mixing my own e juice.
Is it possible to use organic nicotine powder (C10H14N2) instead of liquid nicotine with pg/vg ( pharma grade ) 50/50 no flavors to make e juice nicotine strength 10-14 mg.

Thanks in Advance
Sam

Nicotine is not a solid at room temperature when pure, unless this is a salt or a pharma matrix for gum or lozenges. I will be blunt: ECF does not encourage or support using pure nicotine. Manufacturers that use it must go through training. And if you have to ask about using powder nicotine, then you are really not ready at all to work with pure nicotine. If it is a salt, what is the counter ion? Pyruvate? Acetate? Citrate? Without this knowledge, you cannot know how many moles you are measuring out per gram of powder, rendering making juices complete guesswork...with a very toxic substance. If it is in a solid matrix, it is not fit for vaping, just oral absorption.

Nicotine in its pure free-base form is a liquid, not a solid. This is how it is bought and used by all e-liquid manufacturers. It is very volatile, and it is easy to buzz yourself from the fumes alone. Unless you have heavy-duty ventilation equipment (fume hood), protective ware, and a degree in chemistry or pharma formulation, or hazmat training, you should not do this. Not worth it, at all. It is barely more expensive to just buy 100 mg/mL in PG or VG, and use volume measuring devices, like syringes, to measure out what you need to make your juice. 100 mg/mL is 10% nicotine...and it is still quite dangerous, and should only be worked with with gloves and safety glasses.

And if you have never done DIY, start with lower mg/mL, like 36 mg/mL. DIY is messy, and a spill of 100 mg/mL can have dire results.

Wherever you are getting nicotine powder, there are some major details you are not seeing, or you are not being told. And since it is probably a salt, it is likely to be more expensive than free-base nicotine. Regardless, I strongly recommend just getting some 100 mg/mL liquid and using that. There are plenty of vendors that sell very inexpensive nic. 500 mL of 100 mg/mL costs around $80, give or take, and will last me probably years, and I vape a lot.

If you are having a pro lab do this, then either they know more about the powder than you do, or neither of you know enough. But there is EXCELLENT nicotine coming out of India now. If you are using a pro lab to do this, have them look into Alchem. I suspect some of the manufacturers here selling very pure nicotine liquids are using this nicotine. One does need a fume hood to work with it however.

And again, no one here, even those that know chemistry, want to give advise on using pure nicotine. Too dangerous and not worth the risk or the little bit of money saved.
