I hope you all had/have a happy Thanksgiving. I'm so stuffed I can hardly move, and I'm sleepy from eating and drinking so much, so I think it's off to bed for me.

Here, if you rake them into huge piles up by the road, they come at certain times and collect them. They use a big hose to suck them up into the truck. I wonder if they take them to the compost place, where they take our food scraps.

Ha-ha! I laughed at that. But it made me remember the summer I spent on a dairy farm when I was 12. All the cows had names but one. She was 34864, her registration number on her ear tag. Why didn't she get a name, too, like Brenda and Honey Bee, and the others? I don't know. I guess the farmer...

I thought Pony Baloney was just a nickname. Didn't you name him Gizmo?

Lizzie, congratulations! I know how you've been anxiously awaiting the birth of the puppies. We have snow on the ground this morning, and it's still snowing a little. I doubt it'll amount to much, but I'll have to sweep snow off the car before I go tutoring this afternoon.

I went to the parent/teachers meeting with the new girl and her mom today. She has gone up a whole grade level in reading since I started tutoring her! I had guessed as much, but they have letters for the different levels within a grade, and even the 2 teachers -- her main teacher and her ESL...

Tutoring report. This evening, as well as driving the kids up to their house, I took their mom and we had more chance to talk, but the interesting thing was that the little boy was more talkative in English with his mom in the car than he usually is. They didn't have a decent pencil...

It looks like "itsy-bitsy" wins. Thanks for all your input. I do still wonder how all the variations came to be.

OK, I'm taking a poll. Do you know the children's song about the spider who went up the water spout? Was it the inky-dinky spider or the itsy-bitsy spider or some other version? When I was little, in Philadelphia, PA, I learned "inky-dinky," but now, it seems "itsy-bitsy" prevails. Is this...

The little boy goes to kindergarten, so there, he has to speak English if there aren't other Chinese kids in his class. But even if there are, the teacher will be speaking English. This immersion is much more worthwhile than the half hour 3 times a week I give him. At home, they speak Chinese...

Tutoring report. The kids are doing well, especially the girls, but since I spoke to the original kids' mom several times, it seems the two longest students are doing their homework more thoroughly. My complaint was that they rushed through it. If it was multiple choice, they just marked any...

Aha! Thanks for the tip, Q. Actually, this time I didn't mind. I think I will turn it off with the gear, though. I didn't know you could do that.

Why can't I edit that last message? I wanted to fix a mistake, where the paragraph starts lower case. Is it because of the video attached? So, my apologies. I hate publishing mistakes!

The last lesson with the new girl, she read a story that mentioned someone playing the harp, and she didn't know what that was. I remember this happened with the original girl, too, and I emailed her the link to a girl about her age plying the harp. So now I tried to find that same video, and I...

How much could we reduce military spending if we limited our expenses to just covering defensive, and not offensive, things? I know a lot are the same, but if we didn't get so involved in other countries, we could save a lot of money. Also, other countries might look on the USA more favorably...

OK, I might be living in an alternate universe, but don't you think arguments like this were made when someone proposed free public education for children through high school? I also realize that our schools are in financial trouble, and we're having trouble affording even that, but somehow, we...

Isn't there something pitiful about watching an unequal contest? It would have been better if he was arguing with someone his equal who had an opposing view.
