I doubt your VV devices were firing the .9 ohm coil at the voltages you selected. Protection circuits probably had them firing at or near the lowest voltage they will do.

The 30 will heat up faster but I'm not sure the difference will be that noticeable. Now if you were making 2 ohm coils with 32g and 26g the difference would be much greater. The 26g coil would need a lot longer piece of wire to get the same resistance and it would heat/cool much slower.
