Selfishness is really relative. Aren't the friends also selfish for wanting to know about the guy, even if it makes him feel uncomfortable? So really as the bee hinted, all humans are selfish, it is just our nature

I think you missed the point.

People you are involved with and care about want to be included in major life events - for better or for worse - it's in our very social nature. How can they be considered selfish? - The simple reality is they won't be included in a life event they know nothing about. You leave them hanging feeling snubbed, less of a friend or comrade than they thought they were. People get left in shock, not knowing how or where to start processing what happened. The unsaid remains forever unsaid.

Apparently I've been to a lot more funerals the result of serious illness. You try coming up with the right answer to "I don't understand. Why didn't they tell me?"

Done.

Although I understand where you're coming from it is my humble opinion that when you're dying you get to decide how to do it and who to tell. There are so many things that one needs to process and make peace with I personally would feel very selfish trying to put a guilt trip on them to be responsible for my feelings. That is after all their LAST bit of time and should be their own to use as they see fit.

I will always side with the person who has demonstrated time and time again his willingness to sacrifice themselves for the good of others, a hero.

@Rickajho i do not disagree that what you stated may happen, in fact it's likely a given, but like Tami said, it's not anyone's decision but his.

That's what I meant when I said I "internalized" until I could "cope" with it.
You've explained it much better.

I agree 100% with what you said my friend. However it doesn't refute what I have said.

This scenario is one that you could debate for ages in a morality/ethics philosophy course. It's a good example of both ethical egoism and psychological egoism. There is no right or wrong.

I don't see any quarters here tho !

Sometimes we love our friends so much that we have to make the effort to step back and give them space...that too is love.

Only 92f today! So much cooler because of the water!

:p

One develops a certain gait when one's testicle sticks to one's leg. No rain till at least the weekend and more likely early next week.

i managed after bathing in DEET to mow my neglected front lawn tonight and HRH blew all the cuttings back up at me with my super blowing machine. Since i was covered by that time in DEET and sweat, all the grass stuck to me and i looked like a green glazed doughnut!

Lesson: garden alone.
