10 days in now...trying another model?

Now I feel like I truly have the hang of this. After treating it like its own device and not a cigarette, my 510 is now working wonderfully. It's also helped by the fact that I received some fantastic flavors in recent days. Let's just say that my original intuition that I wouldn't enjoy fruit-esque flavors (and would enjoy richer flavors more) was correct.

Now, anyone who read my previous post (all 2 of you? :p) would recall that I was curious about another model. Now I've decided that I most certainly want to try a "lighter" model than the 510. I find that the 510 sometimes hits too hard for my liking (both in throat hit and vapor production), and I'd like something a little tamer.

I'm willing to accept an automatic battery (since I pretty much have to...only models that have a manual battery are 510 and DSE901, correct?), and I think the 401 seems to be a good fit for me. Does anyone else have experience between the 510 and the M401? I've seen reviews for the M401, but I'd like someone with experience with both to shed some light.

Also, on a side note, I recall a discussion about Johnson Creek's juice going through some changes recently. I ordered 11mg-strength reduced-PG Vanilla and Espresso flavors; haven't tried the Espresso yet, but the Vanilla is A+. Just to let anyone know, I think they're getting it right now. At least with Vanilla!

Good to hear about Johnson's Creek. I might try their liquid out one day, but I keep finding great liquid elsewhere for cheaper. So hey that's how the game goes.

If you want something lighter, with an automatic battery, and good hit but not too strong I'd suggest the RN4081. Here is a video for it and the whole thing/parts are cheap. They are known to be a work horse and last long.

i have both a 510 and a 401...got the 510 first and didnt think i would get another, but go to mods...well i got a 401 anyway and i must say, its actually hitting harder and has better flavor than my 510...even the vapor production seems to be on par, or more than the 510...i might have gotten a bad kit with lame attys, so im going to order some 510 attys and batteries to see...also i dont seem to have to top off as much as i do on the 510 even with the straw mod or teabags as filler...i seem to be tinkering with the 510 way more often than the 401...and dipping/dripping on the 401 is the way to go if you get one:)

After some searching and reading, I actually found out that the Joye 306 (aka Janty Mini Fogger) can use 510 batteries, PCC, and USB passthrough. Also, it's similar to the 401 as it's the "exposed" style atomizer that would make dipping/dripping a lot easier than with the 510. Now the only problem is finding some 306 atomizers; they're either sold out everywhere, or freakishly expensive through Janty.

I more than likely still want to give the 401 a try, but I gotta try the 306, if only because having interchangeable parts with the 510 seems pretty excellent. Plus, I've also read that 306 atomizer + 510 battery = good times overall.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm also new at this but I've been having good luck with both the 4081 and the dse103. The batteries and the attys can be swapped between the two BUT NOT THE CARTS.
The 4081 is a SE GOLD giving to me by a friend who used it to stop smoking and I got the BE/DSE 103 from BestEcig.xxx (very fast shipping BTW 4/5 days, China to Cleveland).
The 4081 atty is great as it's still going strong after 2 newbie’s used it to learn how to vap. I'm not sold on the 103 yet but it's getting better as I get used to it.
I really like the 4081 atty with 103 batteries because they turn on very quickly with a very light draw, maybe to easily for outside because a strong wind can set it off. Also loud sounds can turn it on. This may be a big problem for me as I work around loud music a lot.
The plus side to that is I can preheat the atty by blowing on the led or just giving it a very light tap, kind of like packing an analog cig, to turn on the battery before I take a draw.

I have the 510 and the 401, and I've been surprised to find that I'm liking the 401 better as time goes on. I think these days I'm not looking for the throat hit the 510 delivers, since I've been off the analogs for some time now. I like the smoother hit and good taste/vapor I get from the 401s.

I still do turn to the 510 for reliability and vaping at the bar, though.

What I'm finding is that I want an alternative to the 510 for the following features/attributes...
  • Lighter throat hit/vapor (not by too much, though)
  • Ease of dripping/dipping (since the 510 doesn't seem well-suited to this, and the less I have to fiddle with cartridges the better)
  • Possibly more flavor (as I've heard that the 510 isn't big on the flavor department)

The 306 and M401 both seem well-suited to this. I have to give the 306 a try, if only because all I need to get are atomizers (since they'll work with my batteries/passthrough). If that doesn't work out though, I'm definitely checking out the M401.

Quick take on liquid; anyone have any random recommendations? FYI, I've already tried the following: Apple from e-smokeytreats.com (it's OK, nothing special), "Redd Bull" from cigtechs.com (pretty good), and French Vanilla from Johnson Creek (very good). I also have Espresso from JC that I haven't tried yet.

I have tried, and my other half uses both 510 and 401. I find the 510 a bit 'fat' for my liking, but it does have the manual battery, which is why my other half got it in the first place (van driving DJ, so auto batts set off).

However, for general vaping, he prefers the 401: more flavour without losing much in the way of hit/vapour (in fact, unless you get a really good 510 atty, you can barely notice the difference in vapour and the hit is there without the harshness), reliable, better-looking, longer-lasting battery.....

One thing I would mentioned though, the EVOlution from Intellicig is the one that we use. We tried a few other M401s and weren't as impressed with those..... put intellicig's liquid (ECOpure) in an EVOlution, and I am in vaping heaven!

PS Intellicig are soon bringing out a manual battery for the EVO too, so I think the 510 wil be semi-retired at that point! ;)

i love your post...im a bartender so i generally wouldnt want to bring my 401 to work, but it has been blowing my 510 out of the water lately, so it sounds like my wishes for a manual battery are possible :D

the throat hit is desirable, but less than before since im starting to want more vapor and flavor...and the 401 is giving me that now

ive got 3 evos on the way but have also been super impressed with the 401 i got from MFS...i have never tried an evo so i figured ordering a set with 1 complete evo and charger (so i can charge 2 batteries at once) and a parts set with 2 complete evos without charger and an additional atty for only $82 was a steal, so i had to jump on that deal

as with you, my 510 might go to a new home...but ONLY if someone at intellecig or the like makes a PCC, or i can find some better attys for my 510, like ones that dont die out in a few weeks and stop producing alot of vapor...that would be vape heaven

here's a good place to search for parts ..it is an e cig search engine to many vendors

I love 'em both - Evo/410 with Ecopure/VG and my 510s, for different reasons/occasions.

I also have more than one pair of shoes, for different reasons/occasions.

More than one pair of shoes?? Thats just crazy!
So one of my 401 attys started working suddenly and now its vaping well and consistently. Sorry, I have to retract my trade offer.

If you want to cut down on the throat hit and vapor production of the 510 manual battery, and don't mind using an automatic battery, then what you need is a 306 battery, not a 306 atomizer.

You can use a 306 battery with the bigger cartridge of the 510 atomizer, and it gives a really nice and easy hit. There is still a good vapor, but it isn't as hot and dense it doesn't put the smackdown on your throat.

And some other added benefits are that your juice will last longer in your cartridge, so you won't have to top off as often, and the flavor is also a little bit better as well.

I actually like using my 510 cartridge with my 306 batteries sometimes.
